Editorial Reviews

Booklist
"Grant's novel folds drama and suspense into a story that carries echoes of our country's current financial woes…Its premise will quickly grab readers, who will empathize with Ria's disillusionment and split-second, bad decision making."
The Review Chronicles blog
"This Orca book carried so much depth...Ria felt like a real person, and I truly loved that. This book is something that I really recommend readers pick up if they want a story of intrigue, thriller, romance, mystery, etc. "

CM Magazine
"Grant expertly captures teenage nuances of speech and behaviour…The less-than-happy ending is a refreshing and realistic change from the many young adult books with idealistic finales…A fast-paced and entertaining read that teachers, librarians, and parents should consider sharing with their reluctant readers. Recommended."
TriState YA Book Review
"Realistic dialogue and excellent character development accompany a fast-paced plot. Great for a hi/lo reader…Strongly recommended."

Ria is rich, slim, pretty, popular. But her life suddenly changes. Her parents' perfect marriage breaks up—and then her beloved father disappears in a plane crash. What is worse, rumors begin to surface that he may have perpetuated a multimillion-dollar investment scam. Ria decides to take her little brother and run. She vows to keep the memory of her father alive. Soon though she begins to wonder if her memory is playing tricks on her—or is he? None of the family and friends and clients have any idea that this personable father figure could be capable of running a scam. However, he did turn himself in when he hears that Ria and her little brother are missing. That must be worth something. Her friend Colin, is there for her so all is not lost. Life at home will come together despite where and how they live. This story is another of the new girls' stories that has a different theme and experiences. Hopefully this new young adult novelist will continue with other gripping books. Reviewer: Naomi Butler

Gr 6 Up—Ria's dad is charming, happy-go-lucky, and rich. Too bad Ria is stuck living with her mother, who works hard, worries about money, and is usually tired and cranky. Her father shows up unexpectedly in a 1962 LeSabre and, in a grandiose gesture, hands the keys to his daughter's boyfriend. Ria decides to tell her parents that it would be so much better for everyone if she lived with her dad. But then his plane is reported down, in an assumed suicide. What is worse is that Ria's beloved father is now much maligned; apparently he was swindling his customers. In denial and in defense of him, Ria runs away with her brother in tow. Some plot elements are unbelievable; for example, adults don't inform the authorities of a teenage girl who is either homeless or a runaway, hauling around a little kid. Nonetheless, reluctant and struggling readers will be satisfied by the compelling story.—Jake Pettit, Thompson Valley High School, Loveland, CO

The Orca Soundings series is known for hi-lo titles that appeal to teens; this book is no exception. Ria's been living a good life but that all changes when her dad moves out and she is about to become a child of divorce. Although the family has always had money, suddenly Ria's mom won't accept any from her dad so her lifestyle changes dramatically. After her dad is presumed dead in an airplane crash, word gets out that Ria's dad scammed millions of dollars from his investment clients. Unable to bear the news, Ria takes her younger brother and runs away. Grant conveys the anger and shame of a teen whose image of a parent has been shattered, along with the impulsive dash to run away from problems, in a manner that teens will relate to. Reluctant readers will enjoy this title.

Ria's perfect world is crumbling around her. It comes as a total shock when she hears her parents are divorcing. Sure, her father was usually busy with his career as a stockbroker, but now she's living with her mother and little brother and only seeing her father on the weekends. Shortly after the separation, Ria's dad shows up at her school driving a vintage convertible. He offers her and her boyfriend a ride, and after returning them to school, even offers to let the kids use the car for the weekend. That's the last time she sees him before she learns he has disappeared in a plane crash. Thinking he is dead is a big enough shock, but then Ria starts learning further information that indicates he may not have been the father she has grown to know and love. News of his disappearance is included in all the news broadcasts, and people she's thought of as family friends and acquaintances are making strangely rude remarks. Ria's reaction to all the chaos is to pack up her little brother and run. With only pocket money and a tank of gas, she takes off without a thought as to where they will go or how they will survive. Author Vicki Grant takes readers on a frightening ride in COMEBACK. She captures the disappointment and frustration Ria feels when the life she's always known takes a dramatic turn. This fast-paced read is perfect for reluctant readers.
