Toda la Escritura fue dada en un contexto completamente diferente al nuestro, pero si toda la Escritura es inspirada por Dios y es util para la ensenanza (2 Tim. 3:16), luego la misma debe tener algun proposito para nosotros. La pregunta es: Cual es ese proposito? (Que ensenanza queria Dios comunicar a su pueblo?) El contexto cultural nos ayuda a deducir cual era ese proposito. Es importante entender que la Biblia aborda temas y motivaciones como los que enfrentamos en la actualidad. Lejos de restar relevancia a la Biblia, entender la situacion en la que fue dada nos ayuda a hacerla mas relevante (algunas veces hasta incomodamente relevante). Nos obliga a ver que las personas con quienes trato Pablo no eran simplemente conflictivas y moralmente inestables; eran personas de carne y hueso que vivian una realidad similar a la nuestra. Para entender y aplicar bien la Biblia, necesitamos dos recursos fundamentales de informacion: uno es la Biblia en si misma, el otro es una comprension del contexto cultural del pasaje que estamos leyendo.

Jesus (en Mateo 6:7, 8) nos dice que no debemos orar como los paganos. Pero, como oraron los paganos? "Las oraciones griegas sumaban la mayor cantidad de titulos posibles que tenia la deidad a la cual se oraba, esperando con esto asegurar su atencion. Tipicamente, las oraciones paganas recordaban a la deidad los favores que uno habia hecho o los sacrificios ofrecidos, intentando obtener una respuesta del dios sobre una base contractual. Jesus basa la oracion eficaz en una relacion de intimidad, no en un modelo de asociacion comercial, el cual estaba mas cercano al que seguia el paganismo antiguo".

Por que Santiago (en Santiago 2:6) asegura que los ricos oprimen a los pobres y los arrastran a los tribunales? "Las leyes en los tribunales romanos siempre favorecian a los ricos, quienes podian iniciar demandas en contra de las clases inferiores, aunque estas ultimas no podian hacer lo mismo contra los ricos... como en la mayoria de las culturas, la gente pudiente naturalmente tiene ventajas legales. Ellos pueden presentar sus casos de manera mas articulada o emplear a otros para que lo hagan por ellos". El Comentario del Contexto Cultural de la Biblia.
