Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Launching with a series of definitions to understand what comets, asteroids and meteorites are, kids will appreciate how these space objects were both feared and revered in the days prior to extensive space exploration. In addition to the facts which are presented concisely and at an introductory level, there are pages with the heading--Try It! The activities contained on these pages range from heading out to the Internet to learn more about comets to a variety of experiments that can be conducted with materials that are readily available, but may not necessarily be on hand. Teachers and homeschoolers may find these activities particularly useful. There is a glossary, index and table of contents in this useful and inexpensive science book.
This slim volume has a number of attractive features. True to the publisher's name (Kids Can), it has five "TRY IT" handson activities that students can do at the middle school level. The activity dealing with the force of impact of asteroids of different densities is ingenious in its simplicity. (Density can be a difficult concept to grasp at that age.) The closeup photographs of asteroids are spectacular, especially that of the asteroid Ida with its minimoon.

A couple of problems mar the book. First, while most of the content is presented in a questionandanswer format, the reader is asked to think about only two questions (which are answered later). Second, although the volume is profusely illustrated, the pastel watercolor tones are not particularly eye catching. (from the Starting with Space Series.) Acceptable, Grades 58. REVIEWER: Ronald F. Smith (Msgr. James K. Malisac School) ISBN: 1550745786
