Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Space rocks—a phrase that is literally and figuratively at the center of this book that explores the differences and similarities among comets, asteroids, and meteoroids. The book covers topics such as the appearance of space rocks from earth; their composition; where to find them; how they affect earth; and the future of space rocks. The organization of the material is outstanding. Instead of simply presenting facts, the author uses facts to construct a narrative that is coherent and entertaining. Astronomy is full of ideas and terms that are likely to be unfamiliar to young readers. The author, however, breaks down complex information into pieces that can be easily understood. In most chapters, a short introductory paragraph, which contains a number of facts about the topic at hand, is presented. Then, the ideas in that paragraph are explained and expanded upon in three or four short paragraphs following the introduction. The size of the book is good: big enough to do justice to the photographs and pictures, but not so large that it is hard for small hands to hold. The layout, in which the text and illustrations are presented as though seen through a telescope lens, is inspired. Charts, graphs, photographs, and illustrations work together to illustrate the various points in the book. A list of related websites, a glossary, and an index are included. The end of the book, fittingly, describes the end of our solar system. As the author points out, however, all of the matter in our solar system will be re-used to create a new star or solar system, thus providing an uplifting conclusion to the discussion. Teachers, librarians, parents, and young readers seeking material on the solar system will find this book, part of the "Sky Watching" series, indispensable. Reviewer: Leona Illig
