Overview

Nothing is more comforting than a home-cooked meal. And the best home cooking starts with fresh ingredients found close to home with foods that are local, seasonal, and organic. Raised in her grandmother's Southern kitchen, Katie Lee Joel comes from a "family of great cooks and big eaters." And she knows exactly what appeals to the home cook: recipes that are delicious, easy to follow, quick to prepare, and made with readily available seasonal ingredients.

In The Comfort Table, Katie dips into her archive of family recipes and updates all the classics from her childhood growing up in West Virginia, and also creates some inventive new favorites. This mouthwatering assortment of more than 125 recipes includes Southern staples like Fried Green Tomatoes, Chicken and Dumplings, Peach Cobbler, Meatloaf, and the quintessential Pulled Pork BBQ, which stand alongside contemporary classics like Roasted Carrot and Ginger Soup, Citrus-Tarragon Mahi-Mahi, and Dijon and Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb.

But The Comfort Table is about more than just good old-fashioned home cooking. It's about sharing delicious, healthful meals — made with love — for friends and family. Katie's rich assortment of recipes for starters, salads, soups, entrees, side dishes, breads, breakfast, desserts, and drinks, is accompanied by entertaining tips and anecdotes to delight the modern foodie. The Comfort Table is a comprehensive, unpretentious, refreshingly accessible guide to creating unforgettable meals for occasions big and small.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Katie Lee Joel is married to singer Billy Joel; has been featured in People and In Style; and has appeared on Extra, The Early Show, and Iron Chef America -- but we think that her real claim to fame is this cookbook. The Comfort Table collects 125 home recipes that combine her rustic West Virginia roots and more cosmopolitan influences. The fixings include Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb; Chicken Pot Pie; Roasted Carrot and Ginger Soup; Citrus-Tarragon Mahi-Mahi, and Peach Cobbler.
From the Publisher
"Katie and I met a couple of years ago and became fast friends. We have so much in common, particularly our love of food. Like me, Katie's family had a huge influence on developing her awareness of food and its role at the family table. The Comfort Table is a perfect example of how the table becomes this gathering place where ideas, laughter, memories and love are shared and brought together by fantastic dishes like the ones you'll find in this book. I LOVE Katie's savory Flat Pies and her Strawberry Shortcake is nostalgic with every bite. I couldn't be more pleased to champion The Comfort Table. — Giada de Laurentiis

"Katie Lee Joel, the sweetest Southern belle of cooking, fills your table with easy-to-do comfort foods. First up for meébuttermilk coleslaw for my next BBQ." — Bobby Flay

"Is there a bigger 'foodie' than Katie Lee Joel? I doubt it! The Comfort Table allows all of us to truly understand and realize Katie's appreciation (and hunger) for all things edibleé.especially the cherished recipes handed down to her from family. Katie's warmth and generous spirit comes shining thru in this beautiful book; the dishes are easy to replicate and so delicious, you'll soon be taking credit for them as your own. — Michael Schlow

"I have had more home cooked meals around Katie's table than anywhere else in recent years...and each evening, whether two friends or ten, is filled with warmth, laughter, and of course, incredible food. Southern comfort in the heart of the city...don't turn down an invitation if you ever have the chance." — Nate Berkus

Some recipes make the book worth the price of admission!

I bought this cookbook last week, and have tried out a few of the recipes. The ' 'Billy's skirt steak marinade' is excellent, and my family loved it (all picky eaters). The savory flat breads are amazing, too. If I like nothing else, these two recipes make the book worth the price of admission! The Chicken Divan is next on my list!

    LOVE IT

This is the first cook book I haven't been overwhelmed by, and don't need a glossary of cooking terms. The recipes are great, easy to follow, and take under a half hour of preparation. There's a lot of insight into entertaining, and there are different recipe categories '& drinks too!' As a very, very basic beginning level cook & hostess, this book I can actually relate too. My new fiance' is thrilled with the recipes too. I love at the end of the book, she lists kitchen tools and basics to have on hand, which helped me tremendously when I was registering for wedding gifts! As far as I'm concerned, this girl can do no wrong and I really hope she does another cook book.

    Sweet Southern Basics

Once I bought the book I could hardly wait to get it home. It's a very beautiful book, photography is exceptional. Recipes are fresh and interesting with some homestyle basics thrown in. Her little stories are precious and a great addition. Overall, very nice first effort I would recommend it. Would love to see her on her own show, she is beautiful, relaxed & 'THE GIRL CAN COOK!'

    Pleasantly surprised

I was very pleasantly surprised with this cookbook. The recipes looked like the same ones we are seeing these days, but upon further reading and trying the recipes I found them to be just the opposite. The recipies are easy to follow, most are not time consuming, and use healthier ingredients. I was very excited to find a new recipe for Chicken Divan, it is delicious! I am going to recommend this cook book to others. It is a great new cookbook that is perfect for preparing interesting meals during the week when I have little time to spare. Thank you!

    I Also Recommend:

    My new favorite!

This is a great "basic" book. Recipes for the simple things in life- meat loaf, mashed potatoes, etc.- with a twist to make them special. But not "fancy" the way Martha would make them. Really good family fare that takes foods you know to the next level. We use this for weeknight dinners at least twice a week. One of my best investments.

"A reviewer" wondered why a cook book would include sweet tea.
I moved here from the north and fell in love with sweet tea, but
could never make it taste as good as other people made it. i learned,
but asked friends for help. What one person thinks is easy may nott be so
for another. This cook book doesn't judge people, but actually wants to help
people learn to make new things. There are probably some thingis i think are
easy and others would not know. I would show them, not insult them as you
would. Try being kinder as the cook book is in helping others rather then degrade them.

    A reviewer

Any cookbook that has a recipe for sweetened ice tea makes me think the author isn't really a cook. Who doesn't know how to make sweetened ice tea...you make tea you add sugar. If you want to see a lot of pictures of the author this is a good book for that. For cooking....not so much!

    Not impressed

This book is very simplistic and offers nothing particularly unique. The meals are quick and easy which is a bonus - but there is nothing you have not had before or couldn't come up with on your own. Author seems very phony - so the sentimental tone the book reaches for fails, too. I feel like I wasted my money.

    A pretty bland cookbook

I saw a copy today and it was a pretty average take on food. Her spin on these recipies and family ancidotes aren't worthy of my money.
