Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Eddie Robson offers a brief history of comic books in this early reader that traces significant moments in comic book history, from the appearance of early comic strips in American newspapers to an attempted ban on American comic books in the 1960s to the rise of Japanese manga. Each section is illustrated by multiple photos of comic book creators, readers from different countries, and comic book movies. While the sections about Japanese manga comic books and early British comic strips provide some interesting facts, the book's sparse text fails to capture the richness of comic book history and the many ways comic books have been used for entertainment and education over the years. In all fairness, though, since many kids today have little knowledge of comic books (opting instead for film and video game adaptations of popular comic book properties), Comic Books and Manga offers a good early primer about comic book culture. Aspiring writers and artists will also enjoy the brief section Robson includes at the end about creating comics. Reviewer: Michael Jung
