All Music Guide - Matt Collar
After two albums recorded in the mid-'90s went unreleased and 1999's XTC was largely overlooked, former D'Angelo backup singer Anthony Hamilton's fourth bid for solo success, Comin' From Where I'm From feels more like a hard-won debut. Featuring savvy R&B production from the likes of Cedric Solomon and James Poyser of the Soulquarians, Comin' is a solid mix of organic period keyboards, guitars, and horns and cutting-edge "beats" and synthesizers. While some traditionalists may balk at the hip-hop-friendly sounds, it serves Hamilton well. Not only does it position him squarely at the forefront of the neo-soul movement, but it also allows him the aesthetic freedom to comment on a wide breadth of social and personal issues that harken back to the glory days of '70s soul without ever feeling dated. Listen to how the choir screams against Hamilton's throaty plea on "I'm a Mess," and it's hard not to think of early-'80s Prince, another artist who balanced a classic soul style with forward-thinking production. However, it is Hamilton's soft, earthy vocal style reminiscent of Bill Withers and gritty, personal lyrics evoking his youth growing up in Charlotte, NC that really carry the album. Like a more feminine-sounding D'Angelo with an eye for personal detail that would make Terry Callier envious, Hamilton's deft combination of world-weary fighter and sensitive poet plays out with both hardcore realism as on "Mama Knew Love," where he sings, "Mama knew love like the back streets/Used to wipe pee just to make the ends meet," and then urban humor on "Cornbread, Fish & Collard Greens," in which he wryly proclaims, "If you want it I can rock your world/If you want it I put the juice in Jheri Curl." Comin' from where anybody comes from, this is a great album.

Anthony Hamilton's Comin' From Where I'm From CD is so inspirational and healing to the soul. It's a must have for your music collection -- you won't be disappointed. Even my children enjoy this CD.

I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS EXCITED FOR A NEW ARTIST SINCE MUSIQ SOUL CHILD'S 1ST CD!!!

Anthony Hamilton has captured the essence of urbanized r&b soul music. There are artists that put out good music and those who put out okay music. Anthony Hamilton, on the other hand, has just put out a CD of purely great music. Singing about everything from love to his home. This is a truly satisfying CD. Playable from beginning to end and we all know how hard it is to find a CD like that now a days.

    A lover of GOOD music

This is absolutely the best cd that I have purchased in a long while. I can listen to whole joint without skipping to the next song. Favorite songs are tracks two, five, nine and ten. Finally some good soul music.

    OH, ANTHONY!

A MAN WHO HAS WALKED BOTH SIDES OF THE TRACKS! LYRICS, VOICE, AND STYLE ALL JUST BEAUTIFUL! ANTHONY HAMILTON IS HIS OWN MAN. I LOVE THE FACT THAT HE IS NOT FOLLOWING THE "BLING BLING" WHIM! AS LONG AS HE CONTINUES TO DO WHAT HE IS DOING, HE WILL ALWAYS HAVE A FAN ON THIS SIDE OF THE TRACKS!

    Comin' from Where I'm from

This cd is a cd that you can just relax and think to. Its a real good cd. Each and every song on this cd relates to some aspect of life. It talks about his life and the people in his life. This cd will be on the top of your list. This is my first time even listening to him. His single, "Coming from where im from", is the first song ive ever heard from him, but that song right there is just the beginning. There is much more to come.

SOULFULL TO THE POINT OF TEARS

IF YOU HAVE A BROKEN HEART I DON'T RECOMEND THIS CD, HOWEVER IF YOUR TRYING TO GET OVER YOUR BROKEN HEART BY ALL MEANS THIS IS ONE TO DROWN YOUR SORROWS IN! EVERY SONG IS MELODIC & FUNK DRIVEN! THIS IS A CLASSIC ALBUM, EVEN HAS SOME HUMOR IN "CORNBREAD,FISH & COLLARD GREENS", TRACK 2. THINK MARVIN GAYE OR CURTIS MAYFIELD.

    Oh my god!

I mean whoa! This joint right here is to hot. I mean on the real this is a definate must have for my people who don't listen to music to hear the list of things that an artist own, how much they paid for it, how much ice they have, and how many women they've knocked down. A lot of people get in for the money, fame and glory. Others get in for the love or the music and, I can see that in this album. Like I said before a must have!
