Coming from Somewhere Else: The Rocketown Writers, Vol. 1

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
In the songwriters' mecca of Nashville they say you've never truly heard a song until you've heard it performed by the person who wrote it. Such is the inspiration behind Rocketown Records' new Songwriter's Series, which issues its first release with Coming from Somewhere Else. Marshaling the talents of a quartet of Nashville's hottest songwriters -- Gordon Kennedy, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Phil Madeira and Billy Sprague -- this album is chock-full of familiar songs delivered in fresh and often thought-provoking ways. The tunes include "Place In This World," made famous by Michael W. Smith, and "Change The World," which won a Grammy for Eric Clapton. But hearing Wayne ...

But hearing Wayne Kirkpatrick's pared-down take on "Place" puts a tender emphasis on the song's lyric, making it a powerful counterpart to the original's high-gloss pop. Kennedy's version of "You Move Me" leaves all memory of the song's previous interpretations by Garth Brooks and Susan Ashton behind. Trickier still must have been "That Kind Of Love," a huge hit for the now-defunct PFR and one of Christian music's most-loved pop songs. While Kennedy and company give the song the same rich harmonic blend that endeared the PFR version to music fans, edgier instrumentation make this take inspired and contemporary. With Coming from Somewhere Else, Rocketown's Songwriter's Series is off to a smashing start.
