All Music Guide - Tim Sendra
The title of Carla Bruni's 2008 album, Comme Si de Rien N'Etait As If Nothing Had Happened, is a good joke. After all, since her last album Bruni fell into a whirlwind romance with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and ended up marrying him and becoming the "First Lady" of France. That's a pretty big "something," and indeed it isn't often that the romance of a singer and a president is chronicled on record as it is here -- though you need to be fluent in French to catch the details, since only her cover of '50s pop classic "You Belong to Me" which is a witty nod to a semi-scandalous trip the couple took to Egypt and other exotic locales before they were wed is in English. You don't need to know exactly what's going on lyrically, because the intimate-sounding arrangements on the ballads and the light and breezy sound of the more uptempo tunes clue you in that there is romance in the air. Along with the nice arrangements, the best thing about the album is Bruni's intimate and sultry singing. She can purr like a Gainsbourg girl, strut sassily, or croon quite tenderly -- sometimes all within the same song. Most of the time she sounds like you always hoped a '60s French bombshell would sound but never quite did think Bardot or Birkin. Not surprisingly, Bruni appears totally in control throughout the album, which could be down to her having written almost all of the songs herself, or could be down to her new position in the world. Whatever the reason, it makes for quite an improvement over her previous album, No Promises, and fulfills the promise of her charming debut, Quelqu'un M'a Dit. It is probably the best album released by a "First Lady," but beyond that, it's a pleasant, sometimes compelling album by a singer/songwriter with some stories to tell and a lovely way of telling them.
The Independent
Musically, Bruni's latest album constitutes a fairly sizeable step beyond her previous efforts, which were largely restricted to simple, folksy settings in which nothing was allowed to obscure her husky, semi-spoken vocals. This time, producer Dominique Blanc-Francard has surrounded Bruni's intimate whispers with a range of subtly sophisticated arrangements drawing on roots modes, with clarinet and vibes lending an antique Parisian swing tone to "Le Temps Perdu", delicate harp arpeggios and a gentle undertow of organ anchoring "Déranger les pierres", and mandolin, foot-taps and smears of violin transforming "L'Antilope" into a French variant of Appalachian mountain music.
The Guardian
Bruni's new album is a riot of horns, flutes, electric pianos, vibraphones, Fenders, even, on occasion, tubas. The songs themselves are, for the most part, simple and moving.

    I Also Recommend:

    Carla Bruni doesn't disappoint

Okay, I wanted to hear what the French President's wife/former model sounded like--and I wasn't a bit disappointed. These tracks are catchy, quietly upbeat, and nice to hear again and again. Also, if you are studying French as a foreigner, it's easy to understand Ms. Bruni's interpretations and lyrics. It compares well with her earlier CDs, which I would also recommend.

    Magnificent!

My mother always spoke french or italian, she wasn't much of a fan of English, and therefor I became very fluent in all three languages, but French is still my absolute favorite language. With that, you don't need to understand French to love these CD'S, you really don't, it's simply beautiful, and as the phrase goes "Music is the only international language". I really adore this CD, However I also love Carla Bruni. She seems so sincere and just like a sweet person. All the love songs on the CD are written for her (very famous) husband, Nickolas Sarkozy, otherwise known as the president of France, however it seems so sincere that she loves him, regardless of his political position (cough, president of one of the most beautiful countries in the world).
