Overview

Writer Sabrina Stone had married wealthily and unwisely. Her husband's refusal to love their handicapped son added more strain to an already failing relationship. Yet Sabrina feels a commitment to her marriage - one that she has vowed to honor.

Then one day, she encounters an investigative reporter named Derek McGill who is writing a story on parents of special children. They speak for only a few minutes, but it is long enough for the two of them to feel a desire that stuns them . . . a desire they both assume must remain unfulfilled.

Eighteen months later, Sabrina's husband is divorcing her and Derek McGill is in prison for murder. Following an impulse, Sabrina travels to Derek's prison to tell him that she believes in his innocence. What started as an act of compassion will turn into a dangerous and passionate test of her courage as she tries to uncover who is responsible for Derek's conviction. And she will discover the meaning of one of the most important commitments of all - the one a woman makes to herself. The one that will determine the course of her life . . . and the fate of the dreams she has for her child.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Commitments was written during Delinsky's transition period as she moved from straight romance to the broader arena of women's fiction. As such, the story has a strong romance at its core but attempts to deal with other issues as well. Sabrina Stone's son was born severely brain damaged, for example. Investigative reporter Derek McGill was wrongly convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison in a plot masterminded by a very powerful enemy. The work cascades from human interest to self-discovery to romance cum mystery, passable plots all, but in the end it is too confusing and ultimately unsatisfying. Joyce Bean's narrative contribution makes the tale bearable; she moves easily among the characters and adds emotional depth and tension to the dialog, but she cannot overcome the novel's flaws. Only hardcore Delinsky fans will really enjoy this. Libraries are better off purchasing her more recently copyrighted works.DJodi L. Delinsky's Commitments was a pure joy to read. I was drawn to the powerful romance of Sabrina and Derek and the anguish that Sabrina felt for her son. Not only did the plot intrigued me but the love that bound Sabrina to Derek. Delinsky was able to capture all the emotions that a person can feel when being pushed to the limits: of being loved, of belonging, and of being true to oneself.

Once again Barbara Delinsky writes a truly touching romanitic novel. The read cannot help but be touched by the inner struggles of Sabrina, as she cares for her son Nicky. The love she shows him is truly appreciated by the mother in me. While Sabrina and Derek struggle to resolve a wrong that has been done to Derek, their lives face hurdles and problems. This book is another great touching Barbara Delinsky novel.

Good story but too drawn out. Could have been told in half the amount of pages.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. It was fantastic. There was romance, mystery, and I thought you could really feel the love between Sabrina and Derek. I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read others by this author.
