Overview

Time-Life's modern-rock-with-a-message collection culls "positive" hits from such mainstream acts as Creed, Foo Fighters, Lifehouse, Moby, 311, and Dave Matthews Band, to name a few. The brainchild of former Ambrosia frontman David Pack, the idea is to give youth a "pop-culture reinforcement toward positive life choices," but whether it succeeds at this lofty goal or is merely a sanitized modern rock compilation remains to be seen. Musically, it's hard to find fault with such hard-driving material as P.O.D.'s "Alive," Nickelback's "Breathe," or even Moby's trippy version of "Natural Blues," but fans may well sniff at the two Christian-genre tracks included: Jars of Clay's "Flood," and dc Talk's "Supernatural." Both are nearly a decade old and seem out of place among the edgier material offered here (for the record, newer tracks from both artists, as well as groups like Switchfoot or Relient K, would have been more appropriate). This collection isn't ostensibly Christian, or even Christian-lite; instead, it's a pounding, thrashing, hour's worth of feisty rock 'n' and roll, without any bad words or corrupting imagery. While that's bound to please parents, we all know kids really want to hear those naughty words.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
"18 powerful hits that positively rock!" the subtitle reads, and for better or worse, that's true. Committed 2 Rock is a Time Life comp that courts both CCM and secular fans by featuring mostly mainstream modern rock that nevertheless grooves on a feel good message. It's heavy on groups that straddle the line between altar and alternative -- P.O.D. ("Alive"), Jars of Clay ("Flood"), dc Talk ("Supernatural") -- but also includes stuff from Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters. Things like "Praise You" from Fatboy Slim and Creed's interminable loud rock radio clunker "Higher" have been played out to the point of nausea. Still, they fit with Committed 2 Rock's overriding theme. In the end, it's a compilation with little filler and a lot of positive energy. It should appeal mightily to anyone who's ever wanted to know what it's like to hear Trik Turner's "Friends and Family" fade into Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy." Smile!
