Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Did you know that the common dolphin is one of the smartest in the animal kingdom? Watch dolphins at a theme park show, television documentary or—better still—in the wild to see how extraordinary these marine mammals are. This book, part of the Checkerboard Animal Library's "Dolphins Set I" series, does a fine job of telling young readers all about common dolphins, beginning with the fact that there are two kinds: short-beaked and long-beaked. Easy-to-understand text explains why dolphins are mammals, not fish, where they live in the world's oceans, predator-prey interaction, reproductive behavior, food preferences, how their bodies make them swimming machines and more. Information about dolphins' ability to navigate and hunt for food by echolocation is easy to understand with the accompanying drawing. Colorful photo illustrations, including one featuring breaching (a dolphin's favorite swimming activity) are spread throughout the book. Especially interesting is information about common dolphins' life spans: long-beaked common dolphins can live up to forty years while short-beaked may reach thirty-five. The glossary of key words includes words featured in bold type in every chapter. An index, websites and a two-page spread of common dolphin facts are also helpful additions. The book's size is perfect for small hands. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
