Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Produced by a committee of scholars from a variety of mainstream Christian traditions, the approximately 3600 typically brief entries in this companion to the recently released Common English Bible translation are unsigned. Unusually, the editors are not named, and there is no guiding preface describing the work's scope. This resource further differs from other Bible dictionaries in that it lacks a bibliography, maps, and outlines of biblical books or reproductions from them. Instead, this work will chiefly support readers familiar with the new CEB translation, as the present volume consistently repeats special phrases from it such as "the Instruction" instead of "Torah" and "Human One" instead of "Son of Man." While the new translation achieves smooth reading and readily understandable language, the dictionary contains many scholarly terms that are not defined—the entry "God's Son," for example, refers to the "trinitarian debate" but fails to explain the phrase, and there is no entry for "Trinity"—and topical entries such as "government" and "miracles" contain no specific textual references to demonstrate or enhance their meanings. BOTTOM LINE Because the entries' scholarly quality is uneven, the presentation is not as strong as in other resources, such as the ecumenical HarperCollins Bible Dictionary (3d ed., 2011) or the evangelical Zondervan Illustrated Bible Dictionary (2011). While the CEB resource is similarly priced to other recent, more comprehensive publications, it is more expensive than the similarly compact Essential Bible Dictionary (Zondervan, 2011). This dictionary is suited to only those who prefer the CEB translation.—Marianne Orme, Des Plaines P.L., IL

Meet the Author

The Common English Bible is not simply a revision or update of an existing translation. It is a bold new translation designed to meet the needs of Christians as they work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The Common English Bible is committed to the whole church of Jesus Christ. To achieve this, the CEB represents the work of a diverse team with broad scholarship, including the work of over 115 scholars - men and women from 22 faith traditions in American, African, Asian, European, and Latino communities. As a result, the English translation of ancient words has an uncommon relevance for a broad audience of Bible readers - from children to scholars.

Very good dictionary for the Common English Bible version. The only reason for 4 stars is the size of the font, I wish it was larger. I ordered the book to be picked up at the local store and I received it in just 2 days, wonderful service. Thank you.
