This book deserves a broad audience. Everybody should read this book. In our businesses and our lives we all have communication failures that could easily be prevented with a little skill; but we are blind in the area. For example, I noticed in the "Business of Listening" section that listening is tough for me as a broadcaster. There are simple things in this 80-page book for each of us - stories, tips and labs - that will greatly raise the effectiveness of our communication. Read this book - it's going to cost you next to nothing to read. You can substitute one evening of entertainment and make a difference in your life and work for years to come.

What People are saying about this

This is the sort of book I love. Stimulating, inspirational, full of ideas you can use. I particularly like the weighting towards the importance of listening. It's the yin that most yang books on communication forget. Listening to understand others is one of the most empowering gifts we can offer. Enrich your own communication by reading this book. (Broadcaster and author of "Persuading Aristotle". Director, Centre for Leadership, Australia.)
Col. Joseph LeBoeuf
In the 21st century, perhaps more than ever before, US soldiers need not only technical and fighting capability, but also leadership skills. The chief medium of leaders is communication. Zweifel's powerful yet simple principles, practices and tools enable leaders to use a free commodity - language - to produce breakthrough results. (Head, Leadership Program, US Military Academy, West Point)

I am a huge believer in Communicate or Die. When people speak—and listen—effectively, they get better information, better strategic intelligence, and better results. Zweifel’s short book is absolutely essential for you and your people if you want tight championship teams. (Managing Director Human Resources, UBS Warburg)
Hal Burlingame
Communication is something I have always felt deeply about -- I headed public relations and human resources at AT&T. Communicate or Die shows you the numerous dimensions in the complex fabric of what we label as communications. The book underscores what an important tool speaking and listening can be if handled effectively. You have a choice: you can use your communication skills to build great results and leaders, or you can do enormous damage. This primer deserves to be read by managers of all stripes. (former Executive Vice President, AT&T, and currently Senior Executive Advisor, AT&T Wireless)
Michael Gentz
I keep this book with me at all times, I carry it in my briefcase, because you never know when you might need it to inspire a colleague, or brush up on your speaking and listening skills. An excellent book. (General Manager, ConocoPhillips Germany )
John Hall
An excellent book that offers practical assistance for busy senior managers who haven't got the time to wade through large books and still want to grasp the key messages and applications. The book keeps a perfect balance between anecdotal evidence and the "how-to" of effective communications. I enjoyed reading it, and you will too. (Chief Executive Officer, Australian Institute of Company Directors)

The Matterhorn of Masterful Listening takes an entirely new look at listening, a must for all managers on every level. The book is must for every library, every business office and every manager's desk.

In Communicate or Die, Thomas Zweifel cuts right to the heart of the matter using clear language and illustrations (stories, pictures, tips) that provide the reader with practical, essential communication tools. The chapter on listening based on his 'Matterhorn of Masterful Listening' states that 'your results increase exponentially with the quality of your listening'. I doubt that most of us think in terms of the 'quality' of our listening - and the chapter explicity describes what this means and how to achieve it in communication. Mr. Zweifel does not pretend that improved communication will be easy - the 'Troubleshooting Manual' makes this very clear! But he brings a sense of love and humor to the rigorous practices he advocates that made me as a reader WANT to participate in the process - for myself personally and professionally, and in the best interests of humanity. That is a large result for a 99 page text!

What I was left with after reading this book is that virtually any problem can be solved through communication -- both speaking and listening. Given the kinds of problems we are facing today, Communicate or Die should be required reading for anyone in a position of leadership. We live in a world where everyone has so much to say, but how much of what is said and written is truly productive and makes a difference? And who is listening? Read this book.

Dr. Zweifel points out that communication is not only essential for making a living but for making a life. What is unique about this book of all the books and aritcles on this subject is the author's emphasis on listening. He gives many examples of global crises that can be averted by using the art of listening. The book is written with humor and insight and not one wasted word.
