Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Judith A. Halstead, DNS, RN (University of Southern Indiana)
Description: This is the third edition of a book designed to help dietetic professionals and students develop communication and education skills in nutrition counseling. The book includes chapters on communication, motivation, counseling, behavior modification, principles and theories of learning, group dynamics, cultural diversity, developing and implementing educational plans, and using media.
Purpose: The purpose is to help dietetic professionals and students improve their communication and educational skills with clients, employees, and other health care professionals. A theoretical foundation for developing communication and educational skills is provided, as well as suggestions for application of these skills.
Audience: The authors include a professor of nutrition sciences, a professor of organization management, and a psychologist. Although the text is written for dietetic professionals and students and the multiple examples used are focused on nutrition, any healthcare professional who is involved in client education would find aspects of this book of value.
Features: The text features black and white pictures and illustrations. The reference lists are extensive and current. The appearance of the book is satisfactory with the exception that large amounts of unbroken text can be difficult to read. The text would benefit from more prominent, easy-to-read headings. Other features of the book include suggested study activities, and new to this edition, review/discussion questions and case studies.
Assessment: The book is well written and achieves its purpose of focusing on the development of communication and educational skills. It does not include nutrition content; it is assumed the reader is already knowledgeable in the area of basic nutrition. New content in this edition includes multicultural diversity, media selection, educational principles and theories, and additional information on nutritional counseling. This is an excellent reference for practitioners and students who wish to further develop their skills in communication and education.
