This is the second edition of a book first published in1993 that describes issues pertinent to the development of an understanding of individuals from various cultures and linguistic backgrounds who receive the clinical services of audiologists and speech-language pathologists. It is written in response to a need to increase the understanding of issues related to culture and communication disorders in order to provide better quality of service in the context of a growing multicultural society. An understanding of the interactions between culture, communication, and communication disorders should be a basic requirement of every successful professional in human communication disorders. A book such as this is needed for students as they develop a knowledge base and proficiency in providing clinical services in a culturally sensitive environment. It is also suitable for the working professional, regardless of specialty area, who wants to improve their skills in providing service to individuals from diverse cultural and/or linguistic backgrounds. The author and contributors are, indeed, credible authorities in the subject matter presented in this text. The organization of the text is very user-friendly. One valuable feature of this book is the inclusion of resources in the appendix (books and web sites associated with cultural awareness). The extensive reference lists that appear at the end of each chapter are also quite useful. Overall, the fourteen chapters are well written, and the topics are thoroughly discussed. The text does not provide sufficient information about research needs with diverse populations, or the conduct of clinical research in a diverse cultural/linguisticenvironment. The inclusion of such information might have been useful to readers. However, it is quite comprehensive in its presentation of clinically relevant information, and is a very useful and valuable addition to the literature on culture, communication, and communication disorders.From The Critics
