Description: This is a fourth edition communication text for the nursing student and practicing nurse. The major focus is an emphasis on communication as a life-long learning process for the nurse. This new edition is an aid to help nurses to communicate effectively; each chapter contains examples of "moments of connection" contributed by practicing nurses.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the tools for nurses to move from novice to expert as communication skills are refined and confidence is enhanced. Useful tools, objectives, and exercises are found in this text. This is indeed an advance from previous editions; new features, fresh content, and practice exercises are included to help build and develop communication skills.
Audience: The target audience is every nurse and nursing student to promote effective communication development. The author and contributors have the level of expertise to offer the reader a quality product.
Features: A wide variety of topics in communication are offered in a systematic approach to nursing practice. Nurses can learn how to apply the nursing process in interpersonal communication with clients and colleagues, as well as how to involve them in the decision making process. New features include chapters on culture, assertion, and spirituality, as well as information on electronic communication. There are practice exercises that allow the reader to reflect on how the content can apply to practice. An exciting feature is the "Moments of Connection" boxes in which nurses share their personal stories. Another addition is illustrations by Laurel Burch.
Assessment: This book will be useful to all nurses to further develop effective communication skills. There are exciting new additions in this fourth edition which enhance the content and facilitate easy learning, including personal stories, the addition of numerous proverbs, and whimsical drawings.
