Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ramirose I. Attebury
How do dinosaurs say they are mad? Are their methods similar to toddlers and preschoolers? The first page in the book suggests so, as it shows a Barapasaurus sticking its tongue out at a little girl after an apparent dispute over a tricycle. Depictions of bad behavior worsen from there. Anyone who works with young children will recognize the roaring, yelling, pouting, and kicking and have seen the littlest (and sometimes the biggest) of kids making threats, slamming doors, throwing things on the floor, and ignoring their parents, just like the dinosaurs in the book. Could it be possible that dinosaurs even take things to a more extreme level—tearing up books or throwing a cup at a cat just because there are no cookies or it’s time for bed? Actually, they don’t! Dinosaurs do not do any of those things, and as the book suggests to young readers, neither should they. More appropriate ways of dealing with anger are suggested: counting to ten, sitting down slowly, breathing deeply, and beginning to calm down! And if the not-so-appropriate methods are enacted first, dinosaurs then know to pick up their messes, say they are sorry, and give their mom a hug. Although the tantrum-throwing dinosaurs are as ferocious as their tiny human counterparts, they also retain their inherent cuteness, thus resulting in very satisfying illustrations. With simple text and understandable concepts, this Spanish language edition of How Do Dinosaurs Say I’m Mad is appropriate in any elementary school or public library that serves Spanish-speaking patrons. Reviewer: Ramirose I. Attebury; Ages 4 to 8.
