Meet the Author

Samuel Rush Watkins (1839-1901) was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War. Born in Maury County, Tennessee, Watkins enlisted in the Confederate Army in the Spring of 1861 and served until the end of the war. Watkins was one of only seven men in his company (out of 120) to survive the war. His memoirs, first published in serial form in 1882, provide one of the most comprehensive accounts of the Civil War as told by a private soldier.
