Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This picture book follows three children, their parents, and grandparents as they gather to celebrate a traditional Passover meal, from the setting of the table to the after-dessert sing-along. This "Lift-the-Flap" book gives young readers an opportunity to interact with the text. The flaps hide some of the action and traditions, such as the names and reasons for the items on the Seder plate and the hiding of the Afikomen (a game children play with a piece of hidden matzoh). The book does not go into great detail about the meanings of the traditions because it is geared toward children who are already familiar with the celebrations featured in the book, like the asking of the Four Questions and pouring wine for Elijah. The colorful drawings are simple and easy to follow, and the rhyming pattern of the prose will keep children's attention. The book concludes with a glossary of terms and a recipe for haroset, a traditional Passover item that reminds followers of the bricks and mortar that the Hebrew slaves used for building. 2002, Puffin/Penguin, Ages 2 to 6.
