Overview

This short, illustrated introductory text covers the basics of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and is written primarily from the perspective of what medical students need to know and understand about this subject. It explores what CAM is and why it's popular with patients, what are the principal therapies, their appropriate use for treating common diseases, and how CAM can be integrated into everyday general practice.
  • A short, readable book on the basics of CAM
  • Supported by research findings
  • Applies to everyday medical practice
  • Written at a level suitable for medical and other health students
  • Succinct - thus appropriate for a short module on CAM - with text broken up by boxes, pictures and line drawings

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Martha J. Greenberg, PhD, RN (Pace University)
Description: This book, one of many in the Illustrated Colour Text series, provides introductory yet comprehensive information on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). In addition to specific CAM therapies, apparently those most popular with patients in the U.K., information is presented in double-page spreads, with key point boxes. All sections contain excellent graphs, tables, and illustrations.
Purpose: The aim is to arm readers with enough information to answer most patients' questions about certain CAM therapies and/or assist readers with finding additional resources. The book is a welcome addition to the field. While some of the information is redundant, when compared to multiple CAM books, this is unique in its comprehensive brevity.
Audience: While the book is aimed at medical students, it is more than appropriate for students and practitioners in all of the health related disciplines. The editors have gathered a team of medical professionals and educators from the U.K. who teach and "learn" CAM.
Features: Summaries of common CAM therapies such as osteopathy, chiropractic, herbal medicine, massage including reflexology, aromatherapy, acupuncture, prayer, hypnosis, and nutrition are covered. Since the book is medically geared, topics of patient communication, consultation, and ethics and legal responsibilities are included. The book excels in the chapters on finding and assessing evidence for CAM. The book only falls short in its failure to include energy based therapies such as reiki.
Assessment: This is a unique and worthwhile contribution to the body of growing literature on CAM. Few, if any, books emphasize color illustrations as this book does and organize the information so that it is immediately at the ready.
