A very goooood book! Enjoyed the realism of the time and characters. So many women had it so tough. But it was awesome having a gorgeous sexy man to come to the rescue.read all at once. Read through very quickly.

Just finished this book. What more can I say? I highley recommend this book to anybody who loves historical romances. John Clayton is a spoiled rich man who is very lonely and does not realize it until Emma Fitzgearld comes along and they make that bargin to save the tenants from being evicted. One on the best reads in a long time. Cheryl Holt has done it again. I cannot wait to read another of her books. I look forward to reading her new book in August 2204 ---- More Than Seduction ---

This was the first Cheryl Holt I've ever read, and it will likely be the last, now that I know what her style is like. The constant repetition of the word 'cockstand' was ridiculous; the characters were shallow & the inclinations of the vicar were disgusting...I don't like romance novels that are simply soft porn; the characters should have some depth instead of being stock-figures. Like Robin (another reviewer) I found myself skimming toward the end of this book. Definitely not a keeper for me.

This is the first book by Cheryl Holt that I have read. I Love the way she writes! The heroine had me cracking up the entire time! I would definitely recommend this book and any others by this author.

John Clayton, Viscount Wakefield, is an arrogant, spoiled, over sexed aristocrat! And he¿s met his match in Emma Fitzgerald, the deceased vicar¿s daughter. Emma goes to the viscount on behalf of her neighbors, who have been given eviction notices. She strikes a bargain with him. She offers herself in return for his good will toward his tenants. John Clayton comes across as being an uncaring man. Selfish and spoiled and unused to anyone refusing anything he requests. He is also lonely and friendless and Emma fills a void in his life. He has a mistress who wants to keep him so that he can support her and a half brother, who is stealing from him. As for his brother, I really liked him. Even though he is taking a percentage from John¿s estates, and had been spying for their father for years, Ian Clayton was the only person, besides Emma, who truly cared about John. Emma, on the other hand, is very self sufficient. She is the sole supporter for her younger sister and her invalid mother. She feels responsible for her neighbors and is always helping them. She quickly falls in love with John, but understands that because of class distinction, they can never be together. John reminds her of this often enough. Into this comes John¿s `fiancee¿, Caroline. A woman who was betrothed to his older brother, who died, and who John `inherited¿. He has no intention of marrying her, but she pursues him anyway, because everyone tells her that he will come around. Unknown to her, Ian Clayton has harbored affection for her for years, but because he is beneath her socially, he has never pursued her. John finally tells her that he will not marry her. There is also the despicable Harold Martin, vicar of Wakefield village, who took over after Emma¿s father died. He has a vile secret of his own and is determined to marry Emma. When Emma finds herself in a compromising situation and John has departed for London, ending their relationship, it is Harold Martin who she turns to for help. He is horrible and blackmails her into consenting to marry him. Back in London, John is cleaning up his old mess. He gets rid of the mistress and is confronted by Ian, who tells him about Emma¿s predicament. He knows that he loves her, regardless of their class distinction, and runs off to Wakefield to rescue her. Yes, they do wind up together. John and Emma have great dialogue and the fact that she didn¿t let him get away with anything made me like her even more. She was a strong woman to back a man who needed to be shown how to love.

I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of romance and sex throughout the novel. There were also some laugh-out-loud moments. And there is plenty of steamy scenes. The hero becomes more attractive as the novel progresses and he becomes more human. He begins to have more feelings (compassion) toward the tenants he has mistreated and Emma champions. I thought it was intersting that he never really holds their 'agreement' over her - even when she flits away from him each afternoon. His patience with her and his impatience while waiting for her were endearing.

The book made me want to read all books written by the author. I read for escape and pleasure. I enjoyed the development of the relationships between the characters, and John's, Emma's Ian's and Harold's understanding of themselves. I felt that I was right there with John and Emma, not only during their steamy scenes but also as he was allowed to enter her home for the first time. I work with 'confused' patients and had great sympathy for Emma, Jane and their mother. As a voracious reader, I appreciated the fact that the Regency aspect of the story was kept true. The use of the 'f' word was an interesting addition to the erotic aspect of the book, not used in too many other Regency stories. However, it is an acronmym for fornication under consent of the King, and there were Kings in the the Regency period..... I am looking forward to Ian's story.

I read all the reviews and looked forward to receiving this book, but was very disappointed when I finally got it. I thought the writing was very florid and had no flow whatsoever. The whole premise of this vicar's daughter being the wanton that she turned out to be just didn't fly. I'm an avid reader of romances and have been for years, but I didn't think this book was a good way to spend my money. I skimmed through the last quarter of this book just so I could see how it ended, and then it was tossed in the trash when I was done.

Overview
No bargain as enticing as...
When Emma Fitzgerald storms the manor home of the new Viscount Wakefield, she feels more than justified fury. Having just inadvertently witnessed his lordship in scandalous dishabille with his London mistress, her blood pounds with outrage...and with a thrill she has never felt. She has come to demand better treatment for his tenants, to seek some compassion, a shred of decency from this dastardly rake whose reputation for sin and debauchery precedes him. Now, the erotic image of his powerful flesh only heightens her ...
