Library Journal
DK has completely updated its premium world atlas to include recently independent South Sudan, as well as Montenegro and Kosovo, and the demarcation of the de-facto states of Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Somaliland. The atlas contains 185 pages of full-color political and topographical maps featuring dramatically detailed terrain modeling, along with maps of 102 major international metropolitan areas. Illustrations and text exploring topics ranging from the solar system and plate tectonics to demographics and economics accompany more than 110 world and regional thematic presentations. The world time-zone map fails to note Venezuela's half-hour shift. A "Countries of the World" gazetteer section provides ready-reference information arranged alphabetically for all 196 independent nations, with data such as official name, formation, capital, population, total area, languages, religions, ethnic mix, government, currency, literacy, and average calorie consumption. The general index contains approximately 100,000 entries with full geographic coordinates and page number/grid-square access. The official flags of all independent states are depicted on the back endpaper, including South Sudan and the new designs for Libya, Malawi, and Myanmar (Burma). VERDICT This finely crafted, current, and informative atlas is a close competitor to the superb Oxford Atlas of the World, 18th ed. (2011), and highly recommended. In fact, if DK upgraded the "Countries of the World" gazetteer in this book to include at least the flags and data in the format of the "World Factfiles" in its compact Atlas A-Z (reviewed on p. 101), it would become a direct challenge to Oxford's publication.—Edward K. Big, beautiful well-done maps. Thankfully the standard introductory section of geology, weather patterns, satellite photos, etc.. is kept to a minimum. Which leaves the rest of the atlas for just the maps. Exactly what an atlas should be. The mountainous areas are done with the right amount of 3D effect.
