    Modify your behavior before you diet.

    This book is a refinement of The Beck Diet Solution, taking the principles outlined in that book, "massaging" them a bit, and adding an eating plan.

    Dr. Beck's thesis is that behavior modification is necessary for weight loss even before you make changes to what you eat. If you follow her exercises, you will change your eating habits and be much more mindful of what, when and why you eat. And really, those changes in behavior are extremely important in order to stick to a diet and to keep weight off once we've lost it.

    This program is not for the faint-of-heart, and you have to be willing to devote a lot of time and energy to it. Dr. Beck states that if you can't make this program a priority in your life, you aren't going to be successful, and I think she's right. I read the original book about a year ago, and followed that program successfully for a couple of months, with great success. Then we had a family crisis that took my time and focus away from the program, and I was back where I started. But I do think that incorporating even a couple of her recommendations will make a difference. Right now, I'm focusing on two behaviors using the methods recommended in the book, to the point that at least one of them is now pretty much automatic.

    I am not following the food plan included in this book. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I just decided to stick to the food plan I've been using, because the research shows that which diet you follow doesn't matter. I think the behaviorial changes that can be achieved by following this plan will work with any diet. It certainly helps to keep me motivated. The first recommendation in the book is to make a personal list of the advantages of losing weight. If I do nothing else, I read that every day, and any time I feel like sitting down with an ice cream carton. At least in that respect, this works!
