This book is a useful tool for anyone who must manage his diet. Several food componenets are listed, which makes the booke versitile for calculating intake of fats, calories, carbohydrates, fiber, sodium and cholesterol. Information on fast food is available, and there are listings for various brands of foods, as well as general categories. Serving sizes are noted, which makes calculations based on the book more accurate. This is the third version of the book I have purchased, which is in its eighthedition. I highly reccommend it as a reference for any home where there is a need for knowing the contents of the food we eat.

This not as good as Penninton's Food Values. This book was organized by food types, like fruits, vegtables, etc

I bought this more for my son who is an insulin dependant diabetic. He adjust his insulin to the number of carbs he eats each meal. I think it is helpful when we do meal planning and go out to eat. For the most part, the book is easy to read, and provides a good resource.

As a bodybuilder, I need to know what I'm eating. This book has the basics and provides a list of prot, carbs, fat, calories, sodium, etc for virtually all foods. A great investment.

This book is a great reference but would be better if it included sugar grams. Although sugar is included as a carb for those that are required to limit sugar intake (gastric bypass patients) this book offers little help.

This is a fabulous book if you know the diet to get into the zone that Dr. Barry Sears talks. It is useful for all kind of diets, but as many of them are dangerous as they are not well balanced, better I just talk about this diet. There you can find the adequate quantity of carbohydrates and proteins to take good care of your diet and check about the quantity of cholesterol in the products to choose better. Great book for all the life.

This book is great! This book does cover sugar grams, by listing carbohydrates. The registered dietician knew this, but the lay people that responded, do not. I am a Registered Nurse, and I agree completely with the comments made by the Registered Dietician.

The book is very helpful and a quick reference for the major nutrients of concern to many families and older Americans today. It is especially useful when shopping for healthy foods. The inclusion of carbohydrate as opposed to sugar grams helps people with diabetes take into account all foods that may be contributing to overall high blood sugar. For good blood sugar control it is important to look at the Total Carbohyrate grams not just sugar grams. This book has been found useful by my clients and I will continue to recommend it in the future.

This hefty reference book with its 839 pages of foods is impressive insofar as it lists the grams for Calories, Carbs, Protein, Sodium, Cholesterol, Fat, Fiber for thousands of items. However, my husband and I were stunned by the exclusion of Sugar as a gram to count in foods. With four growing children, ages 7-13, they all know how to read nutrition labels. Sugar has an effect on the physical, mental and emotional centers of the body; there are many individuals with insulin-related disorders; how about kids who are hyperactive? Sugar is an important factor to consider. Did the author intentionally choose not to include this ingredient, was it a publishing oversight? While the book is helpful - it is, in fact, incomplete. Where food and nutrition are concerned, Sugar counts, too - whether it's natural or refined. We're one family interested in knowing this information.
