Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Patricia Blagman, EdD, RN (Pace University)
Description: This book describes various natural or complementary alternative remedies for a variety of pain producing ailments. About a third of the book is devoted to brief descriptions of the therapies.
Purpose: The desire is to help people with acute or chronic pain "take effective action" and regain control of their pain and their life. These are definitely worthy objectives.
Audience: Pain clinics, medical offices, and people's homes are the targeted places for this book. Because it lacks references, I believe it is appropriate for home use, but not for professional offices. The author has published on alternative medical topics. A consultant, who is a physician, has also written on complementary therapies.
Features: A book of natural pain remedies for the general public can be a useful addition to a home library. This book has an outstanding look: beautiful color photographs and drawings, and high quality paper. A handy, quick reference guide is included.
Assessment: For each type of disease or pain, several natural approaches are suggested. It is up to the reader to decide which one or ones might be most useful for the occasion. Dosages are given for some homeopathic and vitamin therapies. Specific pressure points or reflexology points are suggested. The section on subtle energies could have been described in much greater depth; therapeutic touch has been well researched as highly effective for pain relief and is only mentioned briefly. This book is a nice introduction, but a pain sufferer will need to pursue more information than is provided here.
Booklist - Penny Spokes
