This is a sight word book and it teaches just that. These are words that children are expected to master reading by sight starting in kindergarten. We purchased this book the summer between our daughter's kindergarten and first grade years to refresh what she had learned and to get a jump on what she would be learning. We have been beyond pleased with this book. The games are challenging but fun and our daughter loves working on them. She's mastering new words quickly and her reading is becoming more fluent as a result, which is building her confidence. I am actually planning to purchase a copy for my younger son as well, who I expect will work at much slower pace, but will most certainly benefit as well. We are huge BOB book fans, but for sight words, specifically, this item has been so helpful!

Before buying this book look through the word list, compare it to a dictionary and you may quickly see that the description in the overview section listed above in stating that they cannot be
"sounded out" is actually false - it is a whole word approach to teach reading and not support or develop a "strong reader". I fully believe this word list was intended for children to master phonemically and become fluent, familiar and well versed in not necessarily to be memorized with later spelling patterns to make sense of the matter. It under minds a child's ability to blend basic letter/vowel sounds and learn the alternate sounds of letters/vowels/diphthongs and diagraphs and limits children by memorizing and not practicing blending sounds and alternate sounds that make words which can cause further confusion when faced with more complex materials. Our children's intelligence is forever limited to our impatience and the limits we set on their capability, rushed school systems and teaching to test not comprehend is becoming a nightmare. Children are worth the effort to teach them all the right ways and worth the time to allow comprehension to guide them into reading, our current ranking on we stand in education should be an indicator that something needs to be reconsidered.
