    I love this series!

The overall look of the worksheets are very nice, neat and colorful but not distracting. I home school and I have found with other workbooks that it is often unclear to me what they are asking for, let alone my son. Sometimes the pictures are unclear or the instructions are lacking or it's a question like 'which one is bigger?' and you can barely tell! I love the reading section, there is a passage that they have to read and then answer questions about it, it's great for comprehension. It also has Test Prep with mini tests that review the material. My son loves this workbook, and I love teaching with it. And of course, you can't beat the price!

Short on Science and Social Studies

Great for Language Arts and Math. No Science or Social Studies, I would not call this a complete cirriculum.

Great Workbook! Teacher point of view.

I am a second grade teacher while my child is now in first grade. Don't let the size of this workbook scare you! We have been working on this little by little thoughout the year and it is a great suplement to school work. My son is on the younger side but advanced. I thought this workbook might be good for the summer and during breaks from school and it did not dissapoint! This book is very engaging and interesting. Some of the pages are more time consuming but it covers all of the first grade curriculum! I actually just bought the second grade one for this summer :)

    I Also Recommend:

    "Complete Curriculum" Challenging, but Incomplete

I am a homeschooling parent, and have used parts of this text with my fifth-grader. In particular, I chose the English section for use, because their coverage of grammar and usage is accurate and challenging. The parts of speech, sentence structure, and other topics are covered at a level more commonly associated with Junior High or early High School. The illustrations and subject matter appeal to fifth-grade and younger students. This would be ideal for use with a language-gifted child. The average child will require adult help with instructions, as they are a bit too sophisticated for the targeted age group. <BR/> I was disappointed that this curriculum does not include Social Studies, Art, and Science topics introduced through various subjects. This means that users of this book must purchase or create materials for teaching basic competencies in the subject areas required by state and national standards. I would prefer to use American Education Press Comprehensive Curriculum Plus Test Practice for my core curriculum, and purchase supplementary workbooks by Flash Kids, if necessary. I find their books more suited to enrichment or remediation.

    Highly Recommend

Like most parents, I want to ensure my son has the best opportunity to be successful in his education. I purchased this workbook for additional work at home and my son thanked me and I quote, "this is the best workbook ever." He finds the stories in the reading section fun and interesting. He's also learning about new things. He finds the math and all other sections easy to understand and thus that makes him feel extremely comfortable in performing the extra work. He almost prefers to do this over his regular school work. I am very happy I ran upon this series of books and will purchase each summer to prepare him for the preceeding school year! Thanks.

    I Also Recommend:

FlashKids Core Curriculum: An Affordable Homeschooling Option

Very good worktext for homeschool core curriculum, or as reinforcement for materials taught in public school. It is based on text/ workbooks Harcourt publishes for the public school districts, which helps the homeschooler to keep on level with state standards while it allows the student to progress at his own pace. It is easy for the homeschool instructor to teach from. Reading, Language Arts, and Writing Skills Lessons are made interesting through illustrations and variety of topics, including grammar, punctuation, senetence and paragraph structure, research, and writing prompts. The Spelling Skills includes spelling lists with a variety of lesssons on dictionary skills, language arts and proofreading. Math is laid out well for review of previous and addition of new skills. The Test Prep section allows for a less-stress option for teaching standardized testing skills, with a complete test included (this is not an official test accepted by your state's department of education). I would recommend this, along with the other grade levels, the individual skills books and/or the Summer Skills workbooks (for those needing more practice in specific areas), and the handwriting practice worktexts in both Print and Cursive. This curriculum could be improved by adding seperate sections on science and social studies/ geography. I have not used the flashcard sets or Gifted/Talented worktexts, so I cannot recommend or discredit them as useful.

    Homeschool supplemental curriculum

My husband and I purchased the Grade 3 Curriculum for our son who is working on 2nd grade skills this year. We began homeschooling last year and have just started using the curriculum this summer. The Grade 3 Complete Curriculum provides ample practice problems for most subjects and presents topics in a variety of ways. This book is consumable, not meant to be resold, but I believe the price is extremely reasonable. Overall a well arranged book.

    Pros:
    1. The table of contents is fairly easy to navigate and the pages easy to flip through.

    2. Each subject is broken into units and then further broken down to small lessons that are easy for the child to complete. Each unit could easily be introduced and completed in one week.

    3. Each unit starts with a dialogue which is used to present the skill to be learned and practiced. Then the following lessons present practice problems allowing the student opportunity to master the skill. The initial wording at the beginning of the unit is geared towards the student, but it can also be used by adults to help refresh their skills at the same time.

    4. A test prep section is included in the back and is a great resource for parents to introduce test taking techniques to their child.

    Cons:
    1. This book is very large and finding shelf space for such a big resource may be difficult for homeschooling families.

    2. The curriculum is designed to be consumable and most families will probably not be able to resell the curriculum when they are finished.

    3. The book starts out with the upper right hand pages color coded, but it is not continued through-out the book. It would be nice to see each subject color coded rather than just the reading comprehension units.

    4. Some of the wording in the test prep section is geared more towards adults rather than a second-grader.

    5. Each state has different curriculum standards per grade, some of the subjects may or may not be challenging enough for the student and other supplemental resources may need to be purchased.

Overall I think this curriculum is a good supplemental resource and I plan to use it daily this year for most of our planned subjects.

    Well organized and user friendly...

I really like this book. I have been homeschooling my daughter for a couple of years and this is the first curriculum she has really responded to. I use it in conjunction with an on-line curriculum (which also works well for her)...so she gets a really well-rounded education (I think). Also, I feel like I am keeping her working at or above grade level in case she decides to go back to school. Basically, it eases my own insecurities about my abilities to provide all her educational needs. We will continue to use this for her and my youngest will start with it next year!

    Love these workbooks!

We have purchased several other workbooks by Harcourt Family Publishing including this one. The curriculum is well thought out, the homework is not just busy work, they really help reinforce concepts. The books are graphically well laid out, beautifully illustrated, and the printing and paper quality is really high. I've compared them to alot of other curriculums out there and this one is my favorite. Its a bargain too! My son has a language disability and these books help drive home concepts that he doesn't grasp as well in class. Infact the quality of the worksheets in these books are leagues better than the work that either of my 2 sons bring home from their public school. I also love the flash cards from this publisher. They are beautiful, my kids love the colors and illustrations depending on the set.

    Perfect!!

I didn't actually use the entire cirriculum because my son is working at different grade levels with each subject. So I have seperate workbooks (which combined make the entire cirriculum). However, all of the workbooks I use are from Harcourt Family and we love them! When we decided to homeschool, I actually brought my son to Barnes & Noble and together we looked though the different workbooks. He chose these himself and we've been using them for the past two years...and I'm ordering more for the next level! They get right to the point, they don't drag out the explanations 'which is great for a child with ADD' and they're just very easy to use 'for the parent I mean! LOL!'. Whether you're a homeschooler like us or just want to improve upon your childs skills, these workbooks are great!!

    Reccomend book. Not service.

This book is great as a resource for my 6th grader and 4th grader. I am only so saddened and frustrated with Barnes and noble for their canceling my order with out any other options being offered for replacements for other two childrens workbooks.

    Very good book!

My daughter currently in kindergarten does a few pages a day and along with her daily homework, this book is enough for her study routine. It touches all the important concepts of grade one Math and English comprehension. Earlier,I had enrolled her at an online tutorial Math program but she would get distracted there. This book is much better!

Not complete curriculum, but not bad either.

Not a complete curriculum book, but I haven't foumd a publisher that made one yet. Great supplemental workbook for your student that attend regular schooling. Not to be used as a complete curriculum for home schooling. The pages are very nicely done and is colorful which helps to keep the younger kids in lower grade's interest. However, in order to call it complete they must put in social science and science. For social science, I would like to see phycial, earth, and life science starting at 2nd grade on up.

    Perfect for the core subjects...

We live in Germany with the US military and I've been able to get my children into the German schools. We use these books to supplement and keep their English up to date. Also, the schools in our area are at a slightly lower level than these books. So we keep their math skills at the appropriate level too. Once German grade school finishes in 4th grade, we plan to take them out and homeschool them, rather than have them attend German high school. We shall continue to use these books for math and English.

Like others have said, these books do not cover any other subjects. It's up to the parents to supplement where you can. Fortunately we have amassed quite a library over the years covering a variety of subjects. So this is not an issue for us.

As one with an MA in English, I am pleased these books teach grammar and spelling properly. The pages are colorful and keep the children's attention. A very good series for math and English.

Not what I was looking for

The pages are nice and colorful looking, so it's inviting to the kids. But being new to homeschooling I thought the layout was all over the place. I had to completely take the book apart and make my own schedule using the pages. The math especially because they have it set up to do addition for so many pages and then subtraction, and they are not even supposed to get to measurements, time, and money until the end of the year when they should be slowly learning about all of them throughout the year. I had the biggest problem with the spelling section because nothing really went together and it made it so hard for my son to learn how to spell things that I quit using it after a few months and made my own spelling plans. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed with this book and have had a very hard time using it to teach my son. I will not be returning to it in future schooling years.
