Overview

This is a user-friendly guide to the principles of complete denture construction. It is a practical, extensively illustrated book for the general dental practitioner, starting with the examination of the edentulous patient and progressing through the different treatments in a logical way. A range of procedures has been described in sufficient detail so that the dentist can apply the best treatment measure to the specific clinical problem. A final chapter on domiciliary treatment has been included because elderly, housebound patients often present problems such as denture retention (because of the patients’ residual ridge atrophy or insufficient muscular control). Reference to original research work has been included so that the reader can explore the research evidence for himself.

Description: This book is a description of how to fabricate conventional dentures from first visit to post-delivery follow-ups.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a "friendly" dentures clinical manual. This is a good idea considering the complexity of most dentures books. However, this book may not be as useful as it was intended to be. Descriptions of techniques are too general and obviously based on the author's own clinical experience. Moreover, in some instances, critical basic theory is not provided, leaving a gap in the information. The less experienced reader may not understand some of the explanations.
Audience: According to the author, who appears to be a very experienced clinician with vast knowledge in the subject, this book is written for the general dentist, students, and possibly postgraduate students as well. In my opinion, the book may be useful for general practicioners who already have some experience with dentures and are in need of clinical hints and techniques to improve their results. A student may not understand some of the explanations due to their brevity and the lack of basic conceptual theory. Postgraduate students of prosthodontics may find this book too basic and general for their needs.
Features: This book covers all the different aspects involved in the fabrication of dentures. The chapters are concise and provide information as if the reader were in front of the patient. This presentation is good, especially for the busy practitioner looking for clinical improvement.
Assessment: The idea of a short manual for fabrication of complete dentures is good. However, the information in this book is restricted to the author's personal clinical experience. Many other available techniques are not covered. The explanations of techniques are too general and short. More illustrations could help to overcome this problem. Maybe in a second edition, the author could share his experiences in more detail and provide more alternative techniques. That would improve the quality of what could be a great solution for a busy general practitioner.
