Meet the Author
Ben Long is a San Francisco-based photographer and writer. The author of over a dozen books on digital photography and digital video, he has been a longtime contributor or contributing editor to many magazines and is a Senior Contributing Editor for Macworld magazine. He is the author of two-dozen courses on photography and video production for Lynda.com. His photography clients include 20th Century Fox, Blue Note Records, Global Business Network, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, the Pickle Family Circus, and Grammy-nominated jazz musicians Don Byron and Dafnis Prieto. He has taught and lectured on photography around the world. In his spare time he dabbles in computer programming and has written Photoshop utilities that have been used by The British Museum, The New York Stock Exchange and the White House.

I've been trying to get into photography for some time now. I've had my DSLR for a year and a half. I had already read many books about photography basics, including the technical side, and the art side. I thought I understood the fundamentals of shooting; WRONG! I was honestly worried that this book would be a lot of regurgitation because I thought I knew proper use of aperture, ISO, etc. Absolutely not the case. This book gives you a TON of insight as to how to actually USE this knowledge. Many other books show you photos and explain the settings used to create them. They did not, however, make it click. This book does. There is a lot of "juicy" stuff in there that I have actually been turning back to and taking notes on for things such as choosing aperture, ISO, shutter speed. All in a wonderful format. It is heavy, but easy to read. Ben Long teaches you to really understand and think photography, not just how it is done. I am only 1/3 through this book and I am already amazed at what I have learned. Anyone who loves taking pictures, or wants to be an amatuer or professional photagrapher MUST read this book. I am just jealous that I bought this book 2 months before the 7th edition came out. What can you do, though? :)
