    Teach Yourself French

After working through other "teach yourself French" books, I found this workbook the best. The exercises throughout each chapter build from simple concepts to the more complex, allowing the learner to assimilate the information with ease. Heminway provides ample written practice including translating English into French (the skill you need most if you want to speak the language). After my first pass through this workbook, I'm able to read novels written in French as well as carry on conversations.

Don't use this book to teach yourself French. I am at a conversational level--just tested at the DELF B1 level a year ago, but there isn't nearly enough repetition for even an intermediate-level student to really learn. Vocabulary should build incrementally and be repeated in subsequent lessons, but you don't get that here. Living Language CDs and books are much better--I have them on my iTouch and the accompanying books make learning easy.

Excellent study aid for all students of French

This series of books is an exceptional study aid for all students of the French language. The table of contents makes it extremely simple to identify the particular part of grammar you wish to explore and the explanations are clear and easy to follow. The practice exercises allow you to put your knowledge into practice with the added advantage of being able to check those answers to ensure you have fully grasped that aspect of grammar.
