The match-up can make an inferior team become equivalent to or better than a superior team. It can bring a victory out of certain defeat. The match-up is not a man-to-man defense. It is not a zone. It is both. It combines the best features of the man-to-man and zone systems. Opponents must practice and drill specifically against a team using the match-up, rather than run the offenses they have employed the entire season. Such effort is time-consuming and often less than successful. The match-up is a holeless, hitchless, hoop-hiding defensive system of play that can make a team stronger than even its strongest opponent. It is a primary defense just like the man-to-man and the zone. And it can be extended into trapping, stunting, and adjustments. In fact, it can be combined with a coach's other favorite defensive schemes. All the information and details needed to teach and develop the match-up are reviewed and explained in the Complete Guide to Coaching Basketball's Match-Up Zone.
