Overview

The Complete Home Decorating Idea Book focuses on vertical and horizontal surfaces by examining not only windows, walls and floors but also celebrates the fifth wall-ceilings! Readers will discover the clever possibilities for treating surfaces of all kinds with paint, wallpaper, tile, stone, fabric and more. A book unabashedly low on copy and high on brilliant four-color photography, trend expert Kathleen Stoehr (author of the already published Dream Windows and Dream Floors books) developed a unique concept to attract thousands of buyers to this all-encompassing book. Thousands of photographs, consecutively numbered for convenient reference, allow users to easily note potential colors, designs and interiors that appeal. Beginning with a chapter on a personal favorite, window treatments, Stoehr covers all types of hard and soft window products, as well as how to approach the decoration of a large window wall. A chapter on wall coverings follows, including paint, paper, tile, stone, fabric and wood. In section three, the decorated ceiling pulls our eyes upward from the horizontal sweep we normally experience in a room, creating a sense of satisfied completion to any interior. Decorated ceilings, our "interior sky" is attention to detail at its best, creating drama in the dining room or a calm, restful environment in the bedroom. Finally, we look to the floor; an area frequently overlooked, but which is the ultimate component for finishing any room with style. All this and more, including thousands of today's top interior photographs, will be found in The Complete Home Decorating Idea Book.

    Ideas, Ideas, Ideas

A clear cut division of windows, walls, ceilings and floors makes this book easy to use. Of course, I got an idea on floor coverings from the windows section, so don't confine yourself to one section when searching for an idea. Ms. Stoehr doesn't present two or three ideas in each section. She presents dozens. With wonderful photos. Yes! Illustrations may be a little heavy on the more formal side of decorating, but if you are looking for an individual idea, for instance, on bookcases, it doesn't much matter the kind of room you are decorating. You'll most likely find an idea you can adapt. I liked her idea for hanging a long stretch of interesting fabric on the wall to cover something unsightly but necessary underneath, say a breaker box panel. The section on window coverings is unusually thorough. An index covering every page in the book is extremely helpful, so if you see something you like you can find a source in the index. I would have liked the numbers of some paint colors, but that would be asking a bit much. The strength of this book is that it is a compilation of individual ideas, not a comprehensive whole-house presentation. That makes it easier for the user to come up with rooms showcasing her own individual style, rather than a whole-room reproduction of someone else's ideas.
