To those that want to write...

There are many people who aspire to write, whether for the sake of personal interest or for with hopes of one day becoming published. I believe this book to be a helpful guide to that process, but the real ability can only be found inside the writer.

Tom has done a wonderful job of providing the aspiring writer of the basic tools they need in order to write a novel. He included everything from grammar tips to a basis of the actual publishing process.

For the person with heavy criticism, I would ask them to remember that no matter what advice they read or hear of, the only real way that they are going to see something ever happen, is by following their own process in the end, the one that not only combines others' writing advice, but also one's own personal motivation to write.

In an email, Tom told me personally, "I kept coming back for more. And that's what you need to do. Just Keep Writing."

    Good luck everyone!

    I Also Recommend:

    Shame on you, Anonymous!

I find myself puzzling over the comments written by a certain "Anonymous" regarding this book being of little use, because the author, in essence, continuously puts forth the idea that any writer who wants to succeed must immediately quit his/her job and devote all of his/her time to writing. Anonymous, I need some help locating these statements, for in this book, I can find none whatsoever to this effect.

On the contrary, Tom Monteleone provides numerous suggestions and insights on how to follow the path to writing success while simultaneously holding down a full-time job. He even recounts his own story of working as a "cable guy" to support himself and his family while writing in his "spare" time, as if such a thing exists for any of us, including Mr. Monteleone. His creative ideas for dealing with this dilemma do make it possible to carve out those illusive little blocks of time for doing what we writers love best.

In spite of his typically modest start, Mr. Monteleone did go on to succeed at this wonderful and demanding craft. He now speaks to the aspiring writer in so many of us, breaking down the steps of the creative process and explaining the practical realities of the writing and publishing worlds.

I actually read this book, and in it, found the inspiration to change my life for the better. Perhaps you should do the same. Read it, I mean. For in order to understand and, if you wish, find fault with a book, you must first set about reading it. All of it. Anonymous, I wish you good cheer, and most of all, happy reading!

    Easy and Fun to Read!

This is BY FAR the most entertaining and easy-to-read book on writing a novel I've ever read. Tom M. makes his many important points by often using anecdotes and personal experience. Everything is written in a clear informative style. He stresses the importance of writing a few pages everyday, and being a voracious reader--this is what writers do, read and write. A lot.

This Book Is A Must Read

This is a must read for anyone aspiring to become a writer. Tom is able to give a comprehensive review of what it takes to be successful - from creating the first page to achieving the ultimate goal: getting your book published and sold. He simultaneously integrates the know-how while making it enjoyable and simple to read. His book has motivated me to continue in my quest, and I plan on reading it multiple times as a guide in producing my own book.

Little to do with the craft

Though he has twenty novels under his belt, this book does little to really assist the aspiring writer. Some of the tips are excellent, but the whole overall enforcement of the idea that you will not be successful if you can't drop everything and write full time is rampant throughout the book, and not true. I would recommend Stephen King's 'On Writing' instead of this

    It worked great for me!!

Only having written technical manuals in the past, this book was like my bible for writing my book. I read it cover to cover and then went back and highlighted areas that I felt I needed to remember during different processes of writing my book. I couldn't have done it without you Tom! Thanks.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Being and Egomaniac

This book IS NOT worth your time or money. I read the first three chapters and then returned it. Tom Monteleone spends a great deal of time bragging about his own work and how fantastic everyone thinks it is. It is VERY aggrevating to read. Further more, the book is VERY standard. Monteleone does not write anything new or insightful he just churns out the same old tips. He does nothing to inspire a beginning writer and instead slams the door shut on anyone with any interest in writing who cannot devote their entire life to the craft. To my amusement, when I returned this book to the bookstore I purchased it from, I discovered it was the ONLY book of his they had in stock and shelved.

    Not Bad

This book was OK. Some helpful information but not alot on the meat and potatoes of structuring and really building your novel. Also, he does not go into much detail on many subjects or show examples. Like I said, it was OK and worth the price.

If you serious about writing please pay attention

Tom Monteleone knows what he is talking about, it is as simple as that. In a powerful presentation, both from the point of view of a successful novelist and the culmination of years of practical knowledge properly applied to his own and the careers of others, this book is invaluable. I fall into the category of the 'others'. I have followed Tom's advice and through hard work, I have published my first hardcover novel, released this fall, 2004. I can only encourage the serious writers out there. If you want to create a writing career, Tom¿s Idiot¿s Guide is the light to help guide you down the dark paths of the publishing world. Fellow writers buy this book and start walking.
