Overview

The Koran: It may be the most controversial book in the world. Some see it as a paean to peace, others call it a violent mandate for worldwide Islamic supremacy. How can one book lead to such dramatically different conclusions? New York Times bestselling author Robert Spencer reveals the truth in The Complete Infidel's Guide to the Koran: not many Westerners know what's in the Koran because few have actually read it-even among the legions of politicians, diplomats, analysts, and editorial writers who vehemently insist that the Koran preaches tolerance. Now Spencer unveils the mysteries lying behind this powerful book, guiding listeners through the controversies surrounding the Koran's origins and its most contentious passages. Stripping out the obsolete debates, Spencer focuses on the Koran's decrees toward Jews, Christians, and other infidels, explaining how they were viewed in Muhammad's time, what they've supposedly done wrong, and, most important, what the Koran has in store for them.

What People are Saying About This

Geert Wilders
"Governing officials and media spokesmen may ignore Spencer's warnings, but they do so at their own risk, because Islamic jihadists are not ignoring what's in the Koran, and are working to destroy our freedoms in obedience to Koranic dictates. In illuminating for Westerners exactly what the Koran teaches, Spencer has performed a valuable service in the defense of Western civilization against the Islamic jihad."--(Geert Wilders, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Party for Freedom (PVV), the Netherlands)
Andrew C. McCarthy
"Unlike most of today's self-styled experts, Robert Spencer won't tell you that 'slay the idolaters wherever you find them' really means 'love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.' In The Complete Infidel's Guide to the Koran, Spencer shows once again that he is America's most informed, fearless, and compelling voice on modern jihadism, insisting that we come to grips with the words behind the ideology that fuels international terror."--(Andrew C. McCarthy, senior fellow at the National Review Institute and author of Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad)
Bruce Bawer
"Meticulous, comprehensive, indispensable. 'I read the Koran so you don't have to,' Spencer writes--but even for those of us who have read the Koran, this is a richly illuminating work."--(Bruce Bawer, author of Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom and While Europe Slept)

Having worked in Islamic countries, and trying to convey it's Islamic laws and customs to others in a way they could comprehend and appreciate the total meaning of Islams goals, I found this is the ideal handbook that gets to the meat of what every non muslim needs to know. It is a must read for every citizen of the free world who has not a clue what Islam is about. One should be familiar with every aspect this manual exposes and should be a must in public education. It is a non fiction, and correct in every respect, and I backed it up by cross referencing with the Koran.

A must for everyone who believes in the Golden Rule, if you believe in freedom of thought, equality of every human before the law. I used to think that  Islam was just another religion like the others I had studied: Catholicism, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Shintoism.  Now I know better. Don't be afraid to read this book or to research for yourself what the UNCENSORED, unsanitized Koran actually says and what is being taught in schools and mosques around the world, including the USA.

This is a fantastic book, and what makes it so fantastic is that the author does not speculate or characterize without voluminous evidence not only from the Koran but also from the hadiths, which are incredibly important. Additionally, the author supports these by providing supporting statements from imams and islamic authorities. And he doesn't cherry pick either, he doesn't only use people from Hamas or Al Quaeda; he quotes from moderate sources as well as liberal apologists. As someone who has read the koran and studied islam at some length, I find this book incredibly useful as an illustrative tool. Nothing in the book is false, nothing is wild speculation; everything in it is true and demonstrably so given the manner in which it is written and presented. Anyone who is insulted or angered by this book either hasn't read it, or is a muslim offended by the truth.

Must Read. Well organized guide on how to understand the holy book of Islam. As this book to the infidel is not well organized, confusing and not in chronological order - you need a guide who can provide the reader with the content in a digested form. Mr. Spencer provides references to his revelations on this mysterious and obscure religion by furnishing the sources Book, chaper and section so that one can validate what he says on line from the translated Islamic texts.

Spencer is not an Islamic scholar. If he were, he would be Muslim. Islam is the last revelation going to be given mankind. Prophet Muhammad was prophesied to follow Jesus as one who would establish PEACE and he did via the Quaran. Too bad the world is full of tyrants. All the more reason to go get a Quaran and read it for yourself and in context, unlike the manner of this author who has studied it in order to be applauded by his supporters.

It is so dissappointing that this type of amateur speculations manage to get published

besides being badly written I found it to be a poor excuse for actual academic work on Islam and the Koran. reading it was akin to learning about the U.S. constitution by looking over soviet era anti capitalist propaganda posters. superficial, incorrect, obviously biased.

I purchased this book believing, perhaps foolishly, that it would be a humorous but objective/open-minded look at the Koran (something along the lines of A.A. Jacbobs' book The Year of Living Biblically). This was not the case. Instead of open inquiry, Spencer starts out with the view that Islam is an inherently violent religion and selectively chooses evidence to support this claim. This makes for poor argument and poor writing. I would be just as offended if the approach were ideologically opposite but the same in method - it's just a backwards way of approaching any question to attempt to prove your preconceived notions. You are bound to arrive at the answer you want, especially with any complicated text like the Koran. Certainly, it is not the worst example of this kind of scholarship. However, if like me you are looking for an entertaining but honest study of Islam's holy book, look elsewhere.
