Complete Recorded Works: 1926-27

by Josephine Baker

This finds Josephine Baker at the dawn of her music career, recording in France with various backing groups. While some of the later cuts emphasize the over-emoting chanteuse she eventually became, the early sides come closer to real jazz, even if the backing groups lack rhythmic pizzazz. The most interesting tracks here are her version of "Dinah" and her solo efforts

Overview

This finds Josephine Baker at the dawn of her music career, recording in France with various backing groups. While some of the later cuts emphasize the over-emoting chanteuse she eventually became, the early sides come closer to real jazz, even if the backing groups lack rhythmic pizzazz. The most interesting tracks here are her version of "Dinah" and her solo efforts (on which she accompanies herself on ukulele). If you're only used to hearing Baker singing in French and doing bombastic show tunes, this set will come as a revelation.
