Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Writing this work has given James the opportunity to encapsulate the techniques she has developed during 15 years of teaching. The result is a concise guide to the serger and serger techniques. Major sections of the book include identifying the parts of a serger (with photos of each part), serger accessories, types of threads, threading and testing the threading, learning to regulate tension, and techniques. Throughout, James emphasizes using a knowledge of serger threading, needles, and tension to solve any problems relating to stitch formation. A good purchase for public libraries.

This handbook is a big help to an intimidated novice like me. What a great home reference, with bits of humor to boot! The chapters are well organized; the photos are crystal clear; and the copy is concise. Attention to detail abounds and is evident by the chapter breakdown in the table of contents, the generous sized print, and the use of numerous colored photos instead of illustrations. Many confusing issues unique to serging (i.e.terminology, techniques, needles, maintenance, threads, stitches, tensions, potential problems, and many other scary items) are addressed and arranged in a user friendly format. Overall, this book has boosted my confidence and enhanced my enjoyment in this newfound hobby.

This book is for anyone interesting in learning the skills needed to use an overlock sewing machine. Ms. James takes great care into going into all the many facets of learning how to serge successfully. More importantly, she devotes a reasonable part of the book to what a seamstress needs to know to get maximum use out of a serger -- correct tension in the loopers.

After hours of searching in this book I found that the serger stich I wanted was not one that my serger will do. The book was well illustrated and informative
