Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
A very complete text on Phlebotomy that goes well beyond technique, patient interaction and care, but also covers in depth hospital organization, laboratory operations, safety and regulatory issues, compliance, legal and ethical concerns, and all other aspects of the entire health care delivery system. This text could find a wide audience not only for phlebotomists, but also for nursing, pre-med, physician assistants, biology, and exercise science students. Laboratory Mangers would especially appreciate the sections on regulatory bodies, competencies and compliance.Dr. C. Thomas Somma, MT(ASCP)SC, Associate Professor, Old Dominion University, School of Medical Laboratory and Radiation Sciences, Norfolk, VA

Description: This is the third edition of a comprehensive textbook of phlebotomy.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide phlebotomy students with a concise, clear tool for learning hands-on phlebotomy. This is a worthy goal and the author has succeeded admirably in meeting this stated purpose.
Audience: This book would be useful to anyone performing phlebotomy — physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, etc. While originally aimed at phlebotomy students, this updated edition would also be useful to practicing phlebotomists who desire to update their skills and knowledge.
Features: This deceptively small paperback book contains a wealth of information on phlebotomy. Notable is the conciseness and clarity of information that is accompanied by numerous illustrations and photographs of good phlebotomy practice. This book truly exemplifies the adage "a picture is worth a thousand words." A look at the pictures alone and would give readers a pretty good grasp of phlebotomy principles and practice. Each chapter follows a standardized format: learning objectives, NACCLS competencies, key words, text, quiz, and references. The inclusion of relevant NACCLS phlebotomy competencies for each chapter is new to this edition, and is a nice feature that allows readers to self-test for national accreditation exams. A new chapter covers specimen collection and handling, very apropos given the multiple responsibilities of many phlebotomists today. The chapters on professional attitude and grooming should be required reading for anyone in healthcare. A companion instructor's guide is available on a CD, containing PowerPoint presentations aligned with the book. Although this was not included with the book for review, it would seem, based on the excellence of this book, to be a very helpful tool for phlebotomy instructors. One very minor annoyance is the inclusion of the bleeding time procedure — does anyone do this test anymore? (I thought its clinical utility was formally debunked in the early 1990s.)
Assessment: This is a great concise phlebotomy textbook. Get it.
