Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
In the late 1960s and early '70s, Pierre Boulez recorded a set of Anton Webern's complete works that fits on three CDs; now, the conductor has spearheaded a new edition that spans six discs, including a vast number of early and unpublished works that make this new set much more truly "complete." Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
In the late 1960s and early '70s, Pierre Boulez recorded a set of Anton Webern's complete works that fits on three CDs; now, the conductor has spearheaded a new edition that spans six discs, including a vast number of early and unpublished works that make this new set much more truly "complete." Boulez set high standards in his first overview, but here with the Berlin Philharmonic and Ensemble InterContemperain he surpasses them in performances of translucent clarity and refinement of instrumental textures. The choral works benefit from the BBC Singers' spotless precision, especially the radiant Cantata No. 2, while vocal soloists are generally more secure than in the earlier set. Christiane Oelze's disc of lieder is a special delight, including many compositions of Webern's youth that, while unabashedly tonal, anticipate the highly concentrated expression of the composer's mature works. The Emerson String Quartet surveys the music for quartet and trio; here the contrast between the expansive, romantic effusions of his youth and the terse concision of works such as the Six Bagatelles, Op. 9, is especially jolting. Most of the performances were issued on individual discs by Deutsche Grammophon in the '90s -- though some, including Gidon Kremer's recording of the Four Pieces for Violin, Op. 7, have not been available in the United States. Recorded especially for this set were Webern's works for solo piano though more complete accounts of his keyboard juvenilia are available elsewhere: two early movements in late romantic style, performed by Gianluca Cascioli, and two later studies plus the Variations, Op. 27, in insightful and brightly polished performances by Krystian Zimerman. The ample and well-illustrated booklet includes full texts and translations, astute program notes, and a helpful chronology of Webern's life. To discover this modern master's music in all its rich variety and intense expressive power, DG's box set is a clear first choice.
