Jane Austen's delightful, carefully wrought novels of manners remain surprisingly relevant, nearly 200 years after they were first published. Her novels -- Pride and Prejudice and Emma among them -- are those rare books that offer us a glimpse at the mores of a specific period while addressing the complexities of love, honor, and responsibility that still intrigue us today.

Biography

In 1801, George Austen retired from the clergy, and Jane, Cassandra, and their parents took up residence in Bath, a fashionable town Jane liked far less than her native village. Jane seems to have written little during this period. When Mr. Austen died in 1805, the three women, Mrs. Austen and her daughters, moved first to Southampton and then, partly subsidized by Jane's brothers, occupied a house in Chawton, a village not unlike Jane's first home. There she began to work on writing and pursued publishing once more, leading to the anonymous publication of Sense and Sensibility in 1811 and Pride and Prejudice in 1813, to modestly good reviews.

Known for her cheerful, modest, and witty character, Jane Austen had a busy family and social life, but as far as we know very little direct romantic experience. There were early flirtations, a quickly retracted agreement to marry the wealthy brother of a friend, and a rumored short-lived attachment -- while she was traveling -- that has not been verified. Her last years were quiet and devoted to family, friends, and writing her final novels. In 1817 she had to interrupt work on her last and unfinished novel, Sanditon, because she fell ill. She died on July 18, 1817, in Winchester, where she had been taken for medical treatment. After her death, her novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published, together with a biographical notice, due to the efforts of her brother Henry. Austen is buried in Winchester Cathedral.

    No paragraph indents, but otherwise okay

    I'm not going to review the books, since they're all classics and you pretty much know the plots. Instead, I'll direct my critique to the quality of the e-book product. This is a very complete edition for the money and so I really can't complain too much. But there are no paragraph indents or lines between paragraphs, which gets a little tough on the eyes after a while. No, the paragraphs don't run together -- you can usually tell where one ends. Usually.

    Yes, this is a fairly minor complaint given the low price, but it'd be nice if those who upload e-books would pay attention to basic formatting principles. It's not as if we haven't had a few hundred years of printed books to get used to the idea of paragraph breaks. Sheesh.

    Love Jane Austen, hate this Nook download.

    I'm having nothing but problems with this. Pages take forever to turn, the Nook keeps locking up, and it doesn't remember where I left off. I was really hoping that I could read all of her works without having to lug the hardback version around, it doesn't look to be the case for me. I only went with one star because of the download, not the author.

    Has the works...

    The only problems I had with this was the fact that the text has been altered to make it 'simpler' to read, but I just find it irritating. Also, instead of bolding or italicizing all the words are capitalized... I guess there are costs of buying a book 99 cents...

    Every book is a winner!!!

    Jane Austen brought details and characters to life with her lively wit and charm, making every book a masterpiece. All her books are worth reading, but everyone should read Emma or Pride and Prejudice.

    Disappointing

    The last book in the complete works is not complete. I was very disappointed! Got all the way to page 4851 out of 4855 and nothing! If you're a fan of Jane's works, don't even bother starting the last story, you'll be sorry you did.

    Not good

    I could not read the book. The fonts are too small and you can not enlarge or change format. Waste of money.

    DO NOT PURCHASE

    This is awful. I was never able to read it, because each time I tried to jump to a book, the nook froze and the reader had to force close.

    unreadable file format

    I was unable to read this book collection because of bad file formatting. I made it to page 245 of Sense and Sensibility, and couldn't go any farther. Tried to Jump to Chapter 1 of Pride and Prejudice and ended up back on 245 of Sense and Sensibility. Contents info shows I'm reading Lady Susan - totally bogus!

    Waste of even .99

    The first book, Sense and Sensability, stopped at page 245, well before the end. Could not open any of the others, not by table of contents or page number or any other way I could find. Don't waste even .99.

    Should be getting a refund

    I love her books, but this file is too large for my nook to manage. I can not open most of the books! I would ask for a refund but can't ever get through to anyone in customer service.
