Overview

Graduate students often struggle with turning qualitative research projects into a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation because the research itself is inherently messy. Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation: A Roadmap From Beginning to End, Second Edition helps address that challenge. Linda Dale Bloomberg and Marie Volpe have distilled decades of experience of dissertation advisement and successful doctoral defenses into this highly practical reference for graduate students. They focus on finding and articulating a clear research problem, purpose, and questions; laying out a research design that will lead to gathering the right kind of data and support the right kind of analysis; and writing up and defending the study. To help, they provide working tools, an integrative summary discussion at the end of each chapter, comprehensive checkists, and an annotated bibliography in each chapter.

Editorial Reviews

Sharon Piety-Nowell
”I would definitely recommend the Bloomberg and Volpe text to students preparing a thesis or a dissertation because it provides such clear, practical guidelines and examples. It is the best guide I have read.”
Denise F. Blum
“This book should be included in every qualitative methods course. It is unique in its approach. Students need samples together with explanations, which this book accomplishes well. The book does not oversimplify either. It complements whatever texts may be used with it because it serves a unique purpose that the others do not.”

Very useful and easy to navigate.

I am a kinesiology (human movement sciences) and athletic training doctoral student. I am completing a qualitative dissertation, which is not very common in our field. This book has been very helfpul in guiding me through the process. I am only working on my proposal right now so I have a long way to go, but so far it has been very helpful in guiding me towards what goes where and how to present it. After reading through several of these dissertation guides in the library I bought this one because it appeared to be the best. They describe everything (i.e. main parts of the introduction, how to present them, etc), and they give an actual example because the book is set up like a sample dissertation too. Overall, very good and worth the money to me. I have marked it up quite a bit already where certain topics are very helpful.

    What a great find!!!

This is the kind of book I have been waiting for! It tackles the qualitative research process--and what is needed to write a qualitative dissertation-- clearly and succinctly. I have recommended this book to many of my colleagues, and have received very positive feedback from them too. Hopefully this book will be a useful roadmap for the many students out there embarking on this arduous and taxing journey!

This book was a great help!

The most daunting thing about doing a dissertation is that its both a mammoth task and a brand new one at the same time. I found this book incredibly helpful because it provided practical, seasoned advice in a way that helped me move forward, one step at a time, chapter by chapter. It provided the guidance I needed to remove the uncertainty and doubt that can be so paralyzing at times. They've obviously helped many people get their doctorate, and now I'm one of them!

    Excellent resource for Graduate students!

A first of its kind guide to tackling the rigorous and at the same time 'messy' process of conducting qualitative research and writing a dissertation. What is key is that not only do these authors really understand what is needed to navigate the processat each step of the way, they succeed in imparting their knowledge in a usable way. Great book...great resource for students and faculty alike!

    Excellent Resource for Graduate Students!!

Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation is a must-have resource for any student contemplating a qualitative research project, thesis, or dissertation, and equally valuable to researchers undertaking and writing up their qualitative research. Emphasis throughout the book is on conceptual understanding as it relates to the practical aspects involved in navigating the dissertation process. This is an invaluable resource that I will highly recommend to my students!
