This book is a great intro to digital composing with lots of resources for all users. It's written by a real musician. 'Check out Vine¿s bio'. Fun to read. Not too technical but gives extra info to keep techies happy. The author explains the basic equipment you need so you won¿t have to shell out a lot of money to get started. The book also covers important topics such as the business of music and getting your music out there. The accompanying CD has composing templates for lots of different instruments and styles.
