0226732169 Plastic Comb Binding. Aimed at those who have some knowledge of music but no formal training in composition, this concise introduction to composing music starts ... right in with a composition exercise using four notes, then proceeds through a series of increasingly complex and challenging problems, gradually expanding the student's musical grammar. Blank music score is provided for exercises and experimentation. Composing Music also includes the principles of setting words to music, as well as sections on minimalism and "picture music" (music written without notes). Thus, in addition to providing the immediate, practical experience of composition, Composing Music is a reference book of ideas for future pieces. "A basic philosophy behind this book is that the way to learn to compose is to compose. The book aims at practicality and at getting the aspiring composer to write down some music right away. The student is taken step by step through brief explanations and exercises that require him or her to follo ... Read more Show Less

    Excellent resource

I'm just going to say one thing. If you're serious about music, and what to begin composing, or if you're already a composer looking for new ideas, i strongly reccommend this book!!

    Motivation to write some songs

This author is a little uptight (do it my way!) but probably the discipline is what some people need. A step by step book for learning theory and putting ideas down. It was written before computer music composition like Apple's GarageBand existed, but fits in nicely with new technology. I've been using it with Finale's Songwriter 2010.
