radio landline- A circuit that connects a cellular switching office to a cell site or to a public switched network. It also denotes any wireline circuit from a control station to remote transmitters or receivers.

radio link- A radio frequency communications channel between a fixed cellular radio site an mobile units. Also, a radio system established between two points.

Radio Port (RP)- A radio base station (node) that links mobile radio customers with the wireless network.

Random Access Channel (RACH)- A random access channel (RACH) is a shared bandwidth resource used by all DCCH-capable cellular phones to access the system. The RACH is the only logical channel on the uplink of the DCCH.

ReFLEX- Developed by Motorola, ReFLEX is a two-way paging technology.

registration- A legally required procedure whereby vendors must submit their telephone equipment for testing and certification before it can be directly connected to a public telephone network.

Registration Identification- The process where the mobile accesses the cellular network to inform the system it is in its operating area.

Residential System Identity (RSID)- An identity code that is used to differentiate residential systems from public system in a cellular or PCS system. One or more RSIDs can be used to create single location access points or neighborhood residential systems by broadcasting the appropriate RSIDs. When a mobile phone is operating in its designated residential system, the phone typically displays "At Home" and therefore may receive special services (such as reduced billing, and so on). A primary use of RSIDs is to allow cellular or PCS phones to also be used as a cordless phone.

reuse- The sharing of identical radio channels in two or more cells of a cellular network. Sufficient cell separation is required to obtain adequate signal to noise ratio.

Reverse Analog Control Channel (RECC)- The FSK modulated channel that completes the control signaling transmission path from the subscriber unit to the Base Station.

Reverse Analog Voice Channel (RVC)- The FM channel that completes the voice/traffic channel from the subscriber unit to the Base Station.

Reverse Digital Traffic Channel (RDTC)- A digital channel from a cellular phone to a cell used to transport user information and signaling. There are two separate control channels associated with the RDTC: the fast associated control channel (FACCH) and the slow associated control channel (SACCH). Also see FACCH, SACCH.

roamer- A subscriber operating in a cellular system other than its registered home system.

roaming- The capability to move from one cellular carrier's CGSA to another carrier's CGSA without loosing functionality of the phone.

rural service area (RSA)- A small cellular service area or region.

Rural Statistical Area (RSA)- A geographic area designated by the FCC for service to be provided for by cellular carriers that falls outside the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) regions. There are over 400 RSAs in the United States...
