Overview

This solid resource provides a comprehensive examination of neonatal nursing management from a physiologic and pathophysiologic approach. It features a complete physiologic and embryonic foundation for each neonatal system, as well as coverage of associated risk factors, genetics, critical periods of development, nutrition, and parenting.

• A collaborative approach encompassing medical, surgical, and psychosocial care is emphasized.
• The most up-to-date research findings demonstrate the rationales for practice strategies and clinical decision making.
• Appropriate diagnostic tests and their interpretation are discussed in each system chapter.
• The family in the continuum of care is emphasized — including the changing family unit and the sibling's adaptation to a new family member.
• In depth discussions of each organ system include assessment and management strategies, complications, and new technologies.

"The 2nd edition continues to look at neonatal nursing management from a physiologic/pathophysiologic perspective ...covers medical, surgical, & psychosocial care; diagnostic tests & their interpretation; and ethical issues."

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michelle D. Davis, BSN, RN (Medical University of South Carolina)
Description: This book provides a wide range of information to advance practice nurses as well as any health professional working in the field of neonatology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide comprehensive, currently relevant information on a variety of topics that are crucial to the care of neonates. The objectives put forth by the author were clearly outlined and substantially covered. The use of the most current resources and research lends to the validity of each subject.
Audience: This book is designed for use by advanced practice nurses but proves to be a valuable tool for any healthcare professional caring for neonates. As a staff nurse, I feel the addition of this book will enhance our reference library.
Features: This edition covers a wide variety of topics including neonatal development and assessment, recent trends and research, and the need for and development of follow-up care. The use of tables, illustrations and the accompanying CD-ROM add to the book's value and usefulness.
Assessment: As science and technology continue to increase the survival rate and improve the quality of life of our sickest patients, the need for current and reliable resources is crucial. This book covers complex information and presents it in an informative and nonbiased manner. Many books present the clinical application and indication for treatment of neonates but omit the human factor. This book does a nice balancing act discussing the families' and healthcare workers' points of view and how they ultimately impact outcome and steer future practice.
