Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Kenan Rifat Omurtag, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: The standout feature of this overview of basic hysteroscopic tools, techniques, and indications for use is the high quality of the numerous photos of various types of uterine pathology in different stages of hysteroscopic management.
Purpose: The book focuses on providing practical visual information for residents in training and practicing physicians. Understanding hysteroscopy and approaching pathology during surgery are best simulated with high-quality images previewed prior to the procedure. This pocket atlas helps supplement the literature with a seemingly endless array of glossy photos of endometrial polyps, submucous fibroids, hyperplasia, and other uterine pathology pre- and post-procedure. These images help gynecologists in training develop their hysteroscopic skills and seasoned gynecologists to polish them.
Audience: Both residents in training and general practitioners are the intended audience. Subspecialists learning advanced hysteroscopic skills will find the visual aspects of this atlas helpful. Using their private practice background, the authors provide experience that will resonate well with their intended audience, particularly general gynecologists and residents.
Features: This atlas takes readers from preoperative counseling to the operating room. The middle of the book, where most of the images lie, focuses on the variety of pathology encountered with hysteroscopy. In addition to the numerous valuable pictures in this atlas, the chapter on the retained IUD and the nickel-titanium microinsert used for transcervical sterilization provide new information. Another bonus is the inclusion of multiple pictures of various types of dilators, which are sometimes left out of major gynecologic books but are important for resident education. Some might be disappointed with the short text of each chapter, but the goal of this book was to provide a more visual experience, which the authors have accomplished.
Assessment: This book presents excellent images of hysteroscopic operations that are lacking in most gynecologic textbooks. Gynecologists who perform operative hysteroscopy on a regular basis should have an atlas as good as this and practitioners learning operative hysteroscopy should seek this pocket atlas out as a primary reference.
