From The CriticsReviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: The second edition of this now-standard book on geriatric psychiatry is edited by internationally recognized clinicians-researchers, with contributions by well-known experts in the field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a focused but comprehensive review of the psychiatric care of the elderly for the mental health professional. The impetus for the second edition "was stimulated by the continuing growth of knowledge in geriatric psychiatry." The book has been successfully revised and updated; one third of the book was completely rewritten, and the questions in the self-assessment section are new.
Audience: The intended audience is psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, geriatric residents, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other mental health workers.
Features: The book covers all the essential areas of geriatric psychiatry, such as the aging process; evaluation and diagnosis; psychiatric disorders of the elderly; treatment; medical, legal, ethical, and financial issues; and a very useful self-assessment section. Each chapter is followed by an up-to-date reference section.
Assessment: This is an exceptional book covering the critical aspects of geriatric psychiatry. It will continue to be a standard in the field.
