Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the sixth edition of a well-known, classic textbook of psychiatry written and edited by internationally recognized authorities. This is the standard in psychiatry, and it covers all aspects of psychiatry from basic biological concepts to psychotherapy. It is truly an outstanding addition to the field and is a marker of how much psychiatry has developed.
Purpose: The purpose of this classic textbook, which was first published in 1965, is to facilitate the teaching of psychiatry and behavioral science. The authors believe that the textbook is global in depth and scope and is designed to be used by psychiatrists, behavioral scientists, and all workers in the field of mental health. They describe it as the head part of a system that also includes a synopsis and several pocket handbooks as well as a glossary. The authors intend this system to be multi-pronged approach to the teaching, study, and learning of psychiatry.
Audience: The audience includes psychiatrists, psychologists, behavioral scientists, allied mental health workers, and trainees in psychiatry.
Features: The textbook is as comprehensive as the title states. This edition contains new and expanded chapters covering the neural sciences, neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology, biological therapies, geriatric psychiatry, DSM-IV, and substance-related disorders as well as other new sections including chapters on memory, brain models of the mind, HIV, and others. The chapters contain useful tables and diagrams, and each chapter is well referenced and up-to-date (as up-to-date as a textbook can be). This new edition was needed to document advances in the field. The high purchase price may be its only limitation.
Assessment: The sixth edition of this textbook marks its 30th anniversary and is an outstanding contribution. Anyone who works in psychiatry should have access to this textbook.

**** The fifth edition (1989) is cited in Brandon-Hill. The sixth edition is likely the first major textbook to discuss and critique the new DSM-IV terminology and to describe all mental disorders according to the current DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Most chapters have been rewritten, and this edition has 650 more pages than its predecessor because of the inclusion of more written material, illustrations, and tables, including all the tables from DSM-IV. Nearly every diagnostic category and condition covered in DSM-IV is illustrated with a case example. Color illustrations of all the major drugs currently used in psychiatry in their various dosage forms have been added and include the latest drugs available in the US. Annotation c.
