Overview

Completely updated to reflect revolutionary changes in technology and practice, the Fourth Edition of this best-selling reference features state-of-the-art coverage of multislice CT scanners and three-dimensional imaging, plus a new chapter on the acute abdomen and new material on CT and MR angiography, lung cancer screening, pulmonary embolism, coronary artery calcium screening, and interventional CT techniques including radiofrequency ablation and CT fluoroscopy. More than 5,000 illustrations—mostly new 3D and multiplanar images—complement the text.

Each organ system chapter demonstrates imaging techniques, normal CT/MRI anatomy, and pathologic findings. The authors indicate where MRI complements or supplements CT or has supplanted CT as the primary imaging modality.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Anne M. Kennedy
This third edition reviews the application of CT and MRI in imaging outside the central nervous system. The second edition was published in 1987. The editors aim to present a comprehensive text on the application of CT and MRI to the extracranial organs. Since the second edition, technologic improvements have resulted in development of new techniques for imaging and problem solving that have revolutionized non-neuroimaging. This is a timely overview of the new roles of both modalities. The book is primarily aimed at radiologists in training and in practice, but acknowledges that many other physicians seek information on the most appropriate method to evaluate specific clinical problems. The editors are well known and respected, as are the contributors. It is well illustrated and referenced with an adequate index. The decision to divide the text into two volumes was a good one; the second edition was uncomfortably large to carry! I purchased this book as soon as I knew it was available. I read the second edition during my residency, so clearly it was time for an update. Any individual doing CT in daily practice would be well advised to purchase the book. We keep a copy in our reading area for general reference and recommend it to the residents for in-depth study. The new information contained on the applications of CT and MRI to non-neuroimaging is more than sufficient to require a new edition.
