Overview

Dealing with computer architecture as well as computer organization and design, this fully updated book provides the basic knowledge necessary to understand the hardware operation of digital computers. Written to aid electrical engineers, computer engineers, and computer scientists, the volume includes: KEY FEATURES: the computer architecture, organization, and design associated with computer hardware • the various digital components used in the organization and design of digital computers • detailed steps that a designer must go through in order to design an elementary basic computer • the organization and architecture of the central processing unit • the organization and architecture of input-output and memory • the concept of multiprocessing • two new chapters on pipeline and vector processing • two sections devoted completely to the reduced instruction set computer (RISC) • and sample worked-out problems to clarify topics.

I loved this book when I took a (Junior level) course on computer engineering. There's a lot of information about computers here, on several levels -- from designing ALUs and control units from logic gates, to how the assembler works, and the relationship between the instruction set and the hardware that implements it. His example processor design (in terms of presentation) is one the best I've seen...very informative and complete, but readable and not overwhelming. If you want a book on digital design proper, try Mano's _Digital Design_. If you want a medium-duty text on what's really going on in a computer, how to design a CPU, and a wealth of other computer architecture info, get this book! For something more hardcore, try Hennessy and Patterson's _Computer Organization and Design_.

one of the worst books about digital design, subjects are not covered completley, examples are not complete and not related to the chapter problems.
